Just took my new bike (1200GS) for its first ride.

Absolutely love it.

Got home and was a bit hasty with putting the bike cover on and a bit of it melted to the exhaust downpipe as it exits the engine.

Any tips for removing the residual plastic that's now stuck like cement to the exhaust? Searched the web and only found lots of American sites suggesting products that aren't available in the UK.

I've heard that if you just leave it then in due course it will just burn away. I suspect that if you use anything abrasive enough to shift it, it might damage the finish on the downpipes

New bikes eh :D

Thanks all. I'll try to stanley blade first then the chemical solution. Have read a few suggestions of wire wool but I think it will damage the finish. Next question - where to get accetone?

.
I think I would forget the blade and try a degreaser/thinners first.

leave it on, battle scare....:thumb2

all you need now is a good story when it happened...

I do it all the time, just ride it till it burns off, stinks a bit but i've got used to it.

The chrome plating is actually a soft finish. If you use anything metal based on it it will leave scratches or at best marks.

Let it burn away then use a polish. Solvo Autosol was always the known as the best polish for chrome, but use it sparingly as it is actually abrasive and will polish the chrome away if used to often.

As nozza says, do nowt. It just burns/drops off over time. Saves the elbow grease and chemicals.

i find letting the bike cool before putting cover on works well or you after tips to get it off lol sorry could not help it

Thanks all. I'll chalk it up as a learning experience.

I kind of expected a few 'you muppet' responses, so thanks for not disappointing me either on that front!
