Finally going abroad on the bike since 2019 . What a shock and PITA trying to find somewhere to stay near the eurotunnel that has secure parking that didn’t cost a bomb just for one night .

those in the know, pass through the tunnel at 4pm (thus avoiding M20 chaos) and stay in the Ibis Budget in St Omer

^^^^ this. Or get the Hull-Rotterdam ferry and save yourself having to drive south through the overcrowded roads with endless roadworks. A much nicer start and end to the trip. It is more expensive than the tunnel but the overnight is taken care of with very secure parking and one saves around 200 miles each way of motorway slog.

Managed to find a b&b for £75.00 so alls well just hope the slog down is okay ,haven’t ridden that distance for a long time .

Ok is about the best you can hope for. It’s never going to be pleasant as it’s motorway, roadworks, overcrowded roads etc.
I/we have used the channel tunnel many times over the years but now we no longer have a dog and after last year’s debacle both going and on the return I vowed never again. I’ll pay the extra and go Hull-Rotterdam from now on. The last trip (motorhome this time) was a much more pleasant start and end using the ferry.

If the time available suits, then that is indeed a well tried and cunning plan.

Likewise, more often than not, returning in the morning, rather than the evening. The queues are often much shorter outside of peak demand times.

You have collided with the economic principle of supply and demand. The same basic principle encompasses crossing prices and much more besides,

Can you let the forum know the name and address, please. Not least, if it’s any good. I’ll then cross post your words into the accommodation sub-section.

Thanks.

Definitely secure parking on the ferry. :augie Although I once watched a bloke chain his bike up on the ferry. Idiot came to mind.

Or indeed the IBIS in St Omer Town centre, a little more expensive than the budget but covered parking for a few bikes and great for choices in town.

I used to use the central Ibis a lot. The car park is small and usually full of northerners’ vast cars, parked badly. The hotel used to accommodate bikes in the covered area to the left of the entry doors, but they turned it into some sort of store room or a place for the staff to shirk and smoke.

PS The short walk from the Ibis Budget into town does one good…. And helps to encourage a thirst.

I've stayed here a couple of times. A bit further south. Single room EURO 90 and they gave me my own private garage locked and my own key! Couldn't be much safer. Food is excellent but also pricey but if you're looking for just a pizza then the small town of Montreuil has several bars and brasseries

I have used the Ibis in St. Omer once as well. Chuck the bike under the "arch". The store room was full at the time.
Usual Ibis experience: cannot complain.

Where is ‘Here’, please.

Hotels outside of Calais, are (or should be) very much depend on where you intend to go on to the next day. Not least, they might well depend on the time available after you’ve crossed (the loss of an hour is often a factor) and / or some bods refusal to even contemplate using a motorway. Price too, particularly now in France, can be a factor, too.

If I intended to go on to say, Le Mans, I definitely wouldn’t head to St Omer or, (maybe) even use the Chunnel / Dover crossings at all.
