I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this!
I made the most of Sundays fine weather and decided to clean the front calipers. This seemed to go OK!
When I then rode the bike, ABS checked OK and lights went out. After a few miles the ABS lights started flashing alternately. If I stopped and restarted, ABS self check OK again but sae problem a few miles later.
Tried a rolling 4th gear on off job and than the ABS lights stayed flashing alternately despite switching off and restarting etc!
I've tried to reset the ABS, connecting wire to middle connection of diagnostic lead, 8 sec push on ABS button etc. Lights both go on to confirm reset but on turning ignition back on i get alternate flashing again.
I've also used an LED to error check (which has worked well in past) but this time the LED does not flash, stays on (slight flicker as ABS relay clicks).

What have I messed up!!
thanks in advance

Feck knows, but keep us posted when you find out.

Only thing I can think of is water in one of the sensor conections.

Good luck:beerjug:

Did you force the pistons in when you where cleaning the calipers?

Had a spat of the relay in the ABS unit failing, last one was K1200RS and was a pig to replace, but on the R it's a bit better.

Looks possible as you have no LED output....

Hi Timolgra, yes I did push pistons back in to calipers. Some were sticky so I clamped some back in so that I could pump others out enought clean them.

Well, I may need correcting here by Steptoe/Bluetooth but my understanding with ABS brakes is, when pushing the pistons back do so very slowly or even open the bleed valve.

You may need to do an ABS re set now, do a search on here to find out how:thumb

I've tried an ABS reset but this doesn't seem to work! I've attached a wire from the middle connector on the diagnostic lead to the battery negative and held down the ABS switch, bottom ABS light comes on, held for 20 seconds, top ABS light comes on as expected with the ABS reset (so both on together). Turn of ignition etc. Turn ignition back on and ABS lights flash alternatly as if reset now failed.
Not sure if a rebleed of the ABS is needed?
As AndrewD has said though, it could be the relay that is a possible source of the problem as I have a constant light on when I do a blink test with an LED connected to the diagnostic plug.
I've used the LED successfuly in the past to diagnose faulty ABS sensors etc so am a bit mistified as to what a constant light means?!

Any other ideas?

Also, I need an MOT next month, if i can't get it sorted before then, is this an MOT failure if the ABS is not working?

You are to be informed, but it will not fail.

Sure I'm going to be shot for this but....

Every part of every braking system must at all times be in efficient working order and properly adjusted...

C&U regs 1986

IIRC

Just googled this

Maintenance and Efficiency
Regulation 18(1) Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 concerns every part of every braking system and the means of operation fitted to a vehicle shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and be properly adjusted except defects on an anti-lock braking system during the journey on which the defect occurred or whilst being driven to a place of repair of the defect.

HTH.

You would think so and quite logical and sensible......but.......;)

"In the event of an ABS fault the Presenter is to be advised of the fault but not refused an MOT"

That's from the DVLA's guide to MOT testers, advice from the testers is also to cover the lights with some tape, though I'd remove the power to the ABS as AFAIR it kills the lights.

Mad I know, but it should pass

hi in Stratford, welcome to try spare relay if it helps, also got both wheel sensors, cheers

Looks like the original fault is now stored so it probably needs to be cleared by someone with the necessary software/equipment (Steptoe?).

I had a similar problem recently & fixed the abs modulator on my 1150 - details HERE

Good Luck :thumb2

My ABS died in sympathy yesterday, nothing would reset until I had the set off and shorted pins 2 and 4, turned on the ignition and held the ABS for a 1 min. Ignition off then remove wire and it was fine.

Thanks AndrewD, I've been too busy at work recently to reply earlier.
I'll give the reset as you suggest a go over the weekend and see if that makes any difference. Link looks useful, many thanks again:beerjug:

Doh!
misread link, I thought it was another way of reseting ABS, was looking at the 1150 info. Can't get the reset on mine to stay once ignition is turned off.
