hi all,
just been reading gordons thread on abs servo problems in the font of all wisdom section and i have some questions for the tech heads out there....
i've been working on a 96 1100 which is now up and running, it needed a new abs front sensor which i fitted but the abs warning lights keep on flashing.
After reading gordons thread i noted the switches for non abs bikes look the same but are apparently different, does anyone know how so? and why?
i ask as the rear switch on mine is definatley a home made one..

having said all this the brakes work, i just have disco lights on the dash! this is my first bmw and i've never ridden one with working abs so i'm in the dark a little here, could someone throw some light my way..

thanks, neptune

Neptune You need to describe what happens from when you put the key in and turn it!

If the lights flash alternately immediately then you need to clear the ABS fault that is logged

IF they flash together and only flash alternately when you hit the starter your battery is stuffed

If they flash together and you start the bike and the y stay like that and you ride off and they go out you're sorted

So which one is it???

P.S. Switches;- Only the Servo ones operate back to front to the non servo ones and are different part numbers all th eothers are standard ABS or non ABS

cheers guys
thats narowed it down a little for me, will keep you posted!
thankyou, neptune

Am fighting with ABS on a R1150GS, ABS II.

I can reset the ABS, get both lights flashing simultaneously, but when I ride off they start alternating again . I have checked the clearance between the sensors and they seem ok, maybe a bit tight. How precise should it be?

Once, and only once, the ABS worked after a reset. This was with the old battery which has now been replaced with a Hawker Odyssey.
The clock kept resetting so I suspected the old battery to be cause of the ABS fault too :nenau

Where should I start to further diagnose this? All tips welcome!

clearances 95 - 98 r850 r1100 models 0.50 ~ 0.55mm

99 on r850c r1100 r1150GS 0.45 ~ 0.45mm

That is between the tip of the sensor and the ABS ring.

OR You need a blink code reader

and then read your blink codes!

If you have a good accurate multimeter then you can check the resistance to each of the sensors I think it's app 900 ohms

But IF the rear is 900 ohms and the front is open circuit or 30 ohms or whatever then you have your problem! i.e. large deviation between the two values One is fecked

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Where could I get those sensor shims? BMW dealer or any independent? The clearance on the back could have been a bit tight, so it would be easiest to start checking there (especialy when I consider your second suggestion

Uuuhmm yes... way over my head

I have a multimeter, no idea if it's good and accurate. Could you explain in a bit more detail where and how I would do this measurement? Please be gentile, I get around with spanners and the like, but electrical stuff... :nenau

Hate to say it but why not just pay her dealership to reset it for you?

The blink thing is just wire with an led that flashes when attached to the diagnostic bit under the rear seat (on mine anyway). You read the amount of times the led flashes and read them off a chart. no i don't have the chart. It's in here somewhere but my tea is on.

Also, multimeter can be used but only if it has needles not leds.

Of course that's an option, but not as first (or second) resort. It will be much more satisfying to learn how to fix it myself with some help from friendly tossers on this forum. Isn't that what a forum like this is all about?
