ABS or not ABS is the question?

With or whitout ABS; that's the question!

When I was at the driving school I was practising to stop at speed 50km/h on tarmac with and without ABS on the same bike.

And I did the same on gravel.

When I got my license I bought a Scarver with ABS.

And that's all I need to say, I think.;)

45 mins ago I bought a new 1150GS Adv WITH BLOODY ABS ALRIGHT. so Bawdy we are clones.

ABS

Not having it "because the ABS affects your riding style" is ridiculous, I don't ride differently because I have ABS, nor do I ride differently because my headlight is on, it's there to back you up when shit happens, to date I can say I avoided one SMIDSY in a downpour, and possibly a dead dog in the road, I can't say for sure as my arse was doing the half a crown-threepenny bit exercise at the time.

Get it, YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE!:beerjug:

Congratulations Bob.. I was watching your posts over the past week or two, I thought you might have been lured by one of those Orange Adventure thingys (which I couldn't get a test ride on!)

I take it that you got the Smooth Silver as befits a man of your calibre?:beerjug:

Bawdy

I loved the Orange bike, but just couldnt couldnt do it. Why, partly I´m not sure, but it was also related to the comfort over distances, the overheating (fans on all the time in traffic) and high speed stability.

Having said all that if I had to buy one I´d be pretty happy too, the engine is just brilliant!

Of course silver! I told the dealer I´d only take the black one if it was with a black engine, black seat and he changed the yeallow sticker for a red one and threw in a black lid (mines white) he told me to buy a silver one!

I am really happy, its in Madrid right now, will get her end of the week and sometime next week I´ll get my filthy paws on her!. Lots of trips planned I can tell you.

A question when is the first service?

Hi ya mate,

Yes I did and I was very impressed with it I have to admit!! My gut reaction is to go for the ABS option but I was interested to hear other peoples comments.

1000kms is the free one, it's a half day job according to B*M Cyprus, the next is the 10,000kms...
I hope you've got some time off due to you, you won't be able to keep off it... apart from when you're buying and fitting goodies to it:D :D :D

Liv my wife is 5 feet and 2 inches tall. Dont know what that is in metric, but she measures up more or less at the short arse mark. She can only get on by climbing onto the pegs.

Last year I bought her a car, so she wouldn´t say anything about my strange obsession (or the bikes).

Anway shes an awful driver - I wouldnt let her near my pride and joy.

Careful what you say about roasting, it has taken on a rather more serious conotation - particularly within the footballing prima donna crowd ;)

Racer

Going to the NEC tomorrow - it had better be good !!

Hi Bob!
I did know she's not a tall lady: Don't you remeber we have talked about that before?
I know 5 feet 3 inches = 157,50cm, and she is even a bit smaller!
You are 6 feet 4 inches (right?) = 193,00cm.

Are you getting old, my friend?;)
Neeeh, off cause your not! Please forgive me for insinuating something like that!:grin :rose

:) ;) Liv.

PS. Bob; are there a ladder in your shed? Hide it; she may use it for climbing up on your new bike!! DS.:P

At the end of the day I know that its down to personal choice, but I would value other peoples feedback before I spend wot may be a shed load of unnecessary dosh!

Hi Alan,

after several times of help from my ABS I vote for it.

We have tested it on a security training, no one was able to reach my (short) stopway without ABS. 1 meter can be very much.....

I can cadance brake if I need to.

Nothing wrong with cadence-baking, but when the sh*t and the fan meet on a greasy road at night and the drunk that stepped off the kerb is staring in your lights, then ABS is my idea of a good buy.

When I bought mine I chose ABS against a similar bike that didn't have it. I have no idea if it ever comes on, and haven't noticed any bells and whistles once I pull away and the lights go off.

I have braked heavily on numerous occasions in my daily progress through parts of London between the Blackwall Tunnel and Islington as pedestrians appear in front of my from behind buses and trucks etc. Dalston and Hackney must have the monopoly of w*nkers that walk in the road without looking!

I do ride with the idea that it may happen, but it can still need a slam-on and I like the idea that the ABS might stop my arse and the ground coming into contact, especially on the MX style roads, gravel and crap that accumulates as they don't employ road sweepers, and the wet.

I have heard that having the comfort zone of ABS that riders become more aggressive, but I think this is a reaction from the Top Gear small-dick viewers, like Clarkson, and is mainly car dirvers not bikers.

In this week's MCN there's a myths and legends piece and they make the assertion, or rather Phil McCallen makes the assertion, that only new or inexpereinced riders need it. But even at 125 mph round the IOM he never had some dopey tart pushing her brat step out between two buses right in front of him to contend with on a daily basis?

I must admit the ABS on my car is fantastic, the wheels didn't lock once before I hit the car in front of me.
