ABS won't reset

Hope some one can help please.
1150 GS year 2000 Mls 169,000
Have done the abs re-set and it won't. Earth connected from diagnostic plug, press abs switch turn on ign hold for one min. Now if I do this but switch the ign after earthing and pressing abs switch then the lights keep on flashing alternately. Looking at the schematic there is an abs control unit but strangely Motorworks don't sell one. Is this inbuilt or seperate and would this be the problem?

Maybe your ABS switch is duff?

You could trace the wires down under the tank and test it?

hardly trouble and I understand how to make it redundant!!!!

If you read my OP I was actually looking for diagnostic / repair advice

1) check your bulbs
Even if your brake light bulb works, it doesn't mean it's got both filaments working

2) Check your battery.......even if you've had it on charge (NO, ESPECIALLY if you've had it on charge ) and it shows it's fully topped up, it's still fucked.....stick a drop tester across it.

3) check foot and hand control microswitches.
Can you hear them both click in, and out?

3a) do some searching and look for all the other bits I've missed......

4) There's a slight, tiny possibility that your abs is partially fucked......ignore all the ABS haters who instantly switch into 'Take it out!' mode.......the chances are it's just seals or something....do some reading here if steps 1,2,3 are fully (and I mean FULLY) completed and double checked.....you CAN fix it, you CAN bleed it, you CAN sort it out without ripping the ABS guts out




5) rip out the ABS....you do NOT need a 400 quid kit to do it.....again, just do some searching here

PS go back to point 4 at least a dozen times before you commit to point 5

So after you've released the ABS button when you've grounded the connection in the diagnostic plug do you still get flashing lights or do they only return once you turn the ignition off and on again?

No they are both lit and not flashing, after I turn the ign off and then on again they return to alternating flashing

If you go for a run without turning off the ignition do they return to alternate flashing while riding?

What's the battery like is it well charged although the low voltage fault code only usually comes when the starter is pushed

If they flash when you switch on the ignition there is a stored fault code could just be a wheel sensor, which, will show up once you drive off

a quick visit with someone who has a GS911 will give you the answer to that

If they go to alternate flashing before you even try to start the engine it suggests it's part of the initial diagnostic checks run and the battery might not come into it. I've actually got the same problem with mine at the moment.

Mine used to throw an error when I actually started the bike which was due to the battery.

Have you checked the gaps of your sensors?

Take it to a BMW dealership and ask them to diagnose the fault, may cost about £70.

I checked the resistance of both front and rear sensors. The rear showed 145 ohms (don't know if thats OK) the front showed nowt, open circuit. So with that I have ordered a s/hand sensor for the rear, when I have fitted it I will update. Battery fine 12.6 volts after 2 days standing. Sensor gap OK.

For my pennies worth I had the same problem on my K7S and it took almost a year to get to the bottom of it. I tried everything including changing the switch connection cable.

Even the battery was showing 12.6 volts but it was only when I replayed the battery that the symptom went away.

These ABS are very sensitive to the condition of the battery as this is the second time I have had the problem that were fixed with changing the battery.

Ordered a S/ Hand sensor from James Sherlock yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning, Looked dam near new) excellent service.
Measured the resistance across S/Hand sensor 140 Oms (rear was 145 Ohms) fitted /shimmed and did the ABS rest, it now works fine. Happy days

Re the alternately flashing ABS lamps, my '02 GS did this about two years ago and after advice found on this forum, I reset the ABS and all was well for about a year before the symptom returned.

Again from info elsewhere on this site, you can interrogate for stored persistent fault codes using an analogue voltmeter - one with a sweeping needle, not a digital one. I did this and the code related to 'faulty ABS relay' I ordered the one for the fuse box from BMW but it didn't fix it.

Transpired there is another one somewhere under the tank in the region of the ABS modulator. Once booked in to BMW it was about the £150 mark to have them fix it.

Not the worst bill I've had. Now replacing the lunched final drive, that was another matter!!

A bit of help needed here, ive an 110GS and never had a problem ith the abs untill a moth ago, it just stopped slef checking and the lights constantly flash alternatley.

I have tried and checked everything listed in this thread so far and no luck. So there's only the battery left......but it's less than a year old and i have no wish to splash out on a new one unless nessecery.

Does anyone know a 'home' drop tester method so i can give it a proper test??

Schweeet jesus, i've done it

Went round a m8's house and swapped batteries.....no luck. We then went through the re-set procedure REALLY carefully and the second time i heard the beautiful schriccky noise as the ABS worked.

The flashing lights on the instrument console tell you what's what.....but i didn't speak lighty untill now.
