ABS2 Internal Relay

Does anyone have guidance on how to test this works, please?

I have 2 abs2 units, one on the bike and another that I picked up a while ago. The one on the bike has a plunger test failure so is not cycling at start up, even with a new battery, so I’d like to start testing components in the other one that I can then swap across until I suss what is wrong.

Also, does anyone know of a source for these relays?

They aren't your usual common or garden relay.. i've gathered my selection of spares over the years from defunct units.

Thanks Neil, I was hoping you would see this and give the benefit of your wisdom…

I took a look inside the casing and it has an unusual design, so are you aware of any suppliers or how best to test that one is working?

Fundamentally, it looks like a generic relay with a different set of contacts attached, so I would have thought that an alternative could be sourced and made to fit. Is this the usual cause of plunger faults?
 
Hi Paul, I may have one, I had my fully functioning ABS 2 removed by Roy Garner. He gave me all the removed parts back, I don’t know if this relay is still in situ. Is it located with all the other fuses and relays ? I’ll have a look �� and if it’s still there you can have It. :D

Google search the part number item 5. (61362306526)

It’s a FAG labelled relay and there is a BMW procedure to replace it. So if all else fails, then try them.

Removing the relay it should have a contact diagram stamped on the side which will help with fault finding. It will be a high current rated relay so prone to carbon build up on the main contacts. Sometimes it’s possible to remove the cover and clean the contacts inside, refitting the cover afterwards.

I never thought that it might break it down in the parts list… How can you tell it’s a FAG relay?

I can tell from the price that it’s a substantial part but no one has yet said that it’s a common fail point that gives the plunger fault. Does anyone know?

I used to have a 124 series Mercedes’ that had the common fuel pump relay failure. A replacement part was £105 in the ‘80s but you could carefully open it and spot the dry solder joint that the heat caused. Cost £0 to apply a soldering iron and fix it… Won’t it be great if we find it’s this easy to fix an abs unit..? :rolleyes:

When you Google the part No and select the images function. You get a host of pictures many of which are like this.

Also the relay part No S40958.002 also seems a good number to search.

It looks like a special relay manufactured by Tyco specifically for FAG, which is why it’s ridiculously expensive.
