Hi there,

I bought a 2000 1150 GS that had the ABS bulbs flashing alternately.

After a lot of research, I found this:

And that:

Because of that:

A non or disconnected ground.

So I changed the whole harness, found in Germany, and also the circuit board of the ABS control unit found in France.

And I still have the ABS lights flashing alternately when I turn the ignition on and when I'm driving.

If, when riding, I turn off the ignition, put it back on and start again still riding, the lights start flashing at the same time, and when I go below 20km/h, the lights go off and I get the ABS function back.

Is there a procedure to stop having to do this each time I'm using the bike?

Have you connected a diagnostic unit to check the fault?

Could easily be the front or rear brake control unit

To Clarify Do the Lights flash alternately once you Switch on the Ignition

OR Only after you press the start button??

Yes they flash alternately when switching ignition on.

Was able today to connect a GS 911 and news are strange.

It says
Fault Codes 1
6 Vehicle coding wrong
Currently present
6 Vehicle coding wrong

When I try "Clear Fault Codes", it's saying "Unknown".

That seems to be fault code 6. ABS relay.
Try resetting it via the ABS pin on diag. plug.

From here
Resetting R1150GS ABS2

Locate the round diagnostic connector on top of the airbox
With a wire, ground the brown/blue stripe wire (pin #2) and keep it grounded.
Turn the ignition on
Hold the ABS button down for about 8 seconds.
Release the ABS button.
Turn off the ignition, remove wire.

It's possible to connect a low voltage/led probe and count the led pulses to identify the fault code number.

There’s also a relay in the ABS modulator under the black plastic cover on the side of the unit, when that fails you can’t reset the ABS.

.. which unfotunately is no longer available from dealers. And I've have willingly paid the quoted ~€60 price.
I’ve had quite a few knackered modulators over the years and have sent the relays (for free) to people all over the world 🥴

Tried the Largiader process with no success.
Pressing the ABS button with ignition on makes the only lower light continuously on.
Releasing ABS button lights both of them continuously.
Turning ignition off and on brings the two lights to go alternately.

With ignition on, I tried to take off the blue relay in the fuse box. Result was lower light continuously on.

Will check the ABS modulator relay when I'll have a little more time.

Dead ABS relay, so if you still have one Steptoe, I'll be SO happy to receive it. Even against a few beers :beerjug:

Give me a couple of days. I have to go to my storage complex (lock-ups to you and me 😄) and have a rummage through all the shite, sorry, I mean assorted BMW used parts.

Thanks, while you're at it, look for a 2000 1150 GS ABS circuit board, I'll buy it as I don't know where the one I have came from.

I very much suspect that this is why you are having issues!

Your control section of the pump could be from a K bike or and S, R or RT

They are different more than likely to compensate for wheel sizes

Must be something else than wheel sizes because according to realoem 1200 C and 1150GS have the same model.

Or does the big tyre compensate?

Found the good control section and it's finally working well.

The moral of the story is that if you have to buy an ABS diode board, don't be in a hurry to just buy the first model to come out on fleabay but wait for the one that is close to your models, depending on the year AND the country.

Thank you to all those who helped.
