Abus Granit disc-lock carrier mounting on 1150

Does anyone have a suggestion of the best place to bolt one of these on? - I picked one up today but am stumped on a safe/practical place to mount it.

The bolts are just slightly too close together to put it on the rear footpeg tubing, and the plate is not quite wide enough to bridge the gap even right up to the footpeg.

Hmmmmm.

Pondered over this one too, in the end I gave up and just chuck the lock in me handbag ( Tourtech tail rack bag, very handi).

TOP LOCK, Bloody dear though, ah well ya gets wot ya pay for........

I attach a photo or two of my disc lock holder on the left hand bracket. I have the Staintune low exhaust bracket, hence the inner "thingy" to slot the pannier onto and I use the outer for the lock holder. I think it would work without fouling a normal pannier, but you might have to slide it forward a bit. Could try the right hand side but should be the same.

Don't forget the small piece of plastic pipe to slot over your lock key. I used some marine fuel line from a local chandler, but any tight fitting pipe will do. When you put the lock on, this comes off the lock key and slots over the ignition key. You can't start the bike and set off by mistake (actually, you can if you are half asleep and you just pull it off the ignition key and stick it on the lock key without doing the needful...... I've done it!) and it saves groin strain and red cheeks (quiet at the back!) if you set off with the lock on and the bike nearly falls over on a busy thoroughfare.

PS Whenever you feel tempted not to put the lock on, put it on anyway. I know of two bikes (not GSs) that were half inched within a minute of being parked up - and I mean a minute (in one case with a receptionist watching!).

Hope I don't offend or teach granny to suck eggs, when I did my Edge44 the police instructor told me when ever you fit a disk lock fit it directly behind the brake caliper, then if you do forget to remove it the wheel will only move about an inch before locking, this will save you from the embarrasment of cracking your nuts or worse dropping the bike.

Thanks for the pics. I contemplated it there but with the std exhaust there's a lot less room and it'll be burnt fingers every time I park up.

I'll go play in ther garage tonight, after I've been down to our stores to source some rubber to prevent it gouging the pannier hanger.

I have the std exhaust, fitted mine in the same place but the disclock goes on the outside of the pannier bracket, been on there for more than a year no burnt fingers but does pick up the crap, regular WD40 keeps it working. I can't find a more suitable place, still looking though.
 
Dont do what my mate did ! A very experienced bike instructor... on somebody elses Ducati... gravel... hedge..bike.. field...broken ribs because the disc lock was in his back pack. This man has beaten safety into me and one mistake on his part broke three of his ribs.
 
yep... that'd be a mess.

The other thought was to get a toolbox replacement sorted out and keep it under the seat with the puncture kit and a gerber tool for days without panniers. - who's got the best one of these?

(as I really only fiddle in the garage, and the AA can do anything major if the bike conks out in the middle of nowhere.)

I'm not a granny and I don't mind the odd egg. As a statement of the bleeding obvious its brilliant. I am trying to work out why I never thought of it! I shall put it into practice, since I have once absent mindedly over-ridden (ho ho) the other system - just don't try and "walk" the bike backwards before you set off, I suppose!

ianf, if you put it on the right hand side it would be harder to burn your fingers.

I've not had time to fiddle much, but the RHS has the bevel box's travel space in it and I don't want the two to meet. I've got a suitable HG turaeg bag for the rear carrier, but someone will nick that off the bike for sure when it's parked up. Might zip tie it to prevent the casual unbuckling though.

I tend to leave the kill switch off with a 'BIKE' freebie coiled disk lock reminder string from the lock to the switch to stop me starting off unconscious of the lock.
 
I use an old very thin bungee, slipped over the hand guard, you can't forget it's on then, unless your pi**ed.

Hi Ianf,

Mine's mounted inboard of the left pillion peg.

I took out the exhaust can mounting bolt (the single one that bolts the can onto the rear peg hanger) and bought a slightly longer version of it.

I then put the new bolt through one of the holes in the disc lock carrier, then through the exhaust can mounting (from the 'wheel side') and then screwed it back into the rear peg hanger.

Before tightening up the bolt swivel the disc lock carrier so that the bottom end of the actual disc lock will point rearwards (looks neater).

Tighten up your new bolt. Don't worry that you've only secured the disc lock carrier with only one bolt, mines been in place since 2000 when I got my GS and has done 39,000 miles without moving. Looks 'Factory'.

It doesn't interfere with pillion or luggage or get hot being right above the exhaust can (works ok with my newly fitted Remus Revolution as well).

Sorry but no picture. I'm still fannying about trying to decide which camera to get / how much to spend.

I support Psyko's advice about the 'forget me not' piece of plastic pipe on your key. Has worked for me. If you don't use any form of reminder you will forget one day. Trust me....

Oh yeh i can vouch for the reminders..
I just bought my GS and at the cat and fiddle, i had forgotten my City black Abus chain was round the front,, almost made a muppet of my self and worse, a mess of the wheel and bike..
But a lovely couple just getting on their bike pointed it out to me and depsite an embarrising moment..

I did not rideoff.

Thanks for the tip about the disc lock going behind the disc, I wonder why the manufacturers dont put something like that in the instructions..

Yeah, I have just been pondering the placement of the disc lock holder on the GSA.

Alternatively you could use the Arbus bag that came with the disc lock. I used that on the XB12S as there is zero storeage space under the seat. I took a couple of cable ties, a few careful slits in the bag and attached as per the photo... ...would do for the GSA but have not got a bag for the Granit (I always use one of those yellow curly things to save embarassment and pain)...

It fits a treat on the n/side pillion footrest bracket of a DT125.

Could his possibly be the most stupid bit of advice ever?
I shudder to think what would happen should one the cable ties give up (Maybe due to shafing by the lock on the cable tie when on the move?) That will make your steering so much more accurate with a disc lock jammed between your tank and the fork leg!
You weren't American in a previous life were you?
 
Useful reminder I find to avoid the awful "ride off for half a wheel revolution before disc lock hits fork" scenario is to only ever leave kill switch off when lock is on. I guess it isn't idiot proof, but seems to work for me in a sort of Pavlov dog kinda way.

And yes, I have proved I'm an idiot in aforementioned scenario, once did it in and blocked a main road in the middle of Bruges on my old 1100GS, v.embarrasing...
