Access to battery terminals 1150GS

Hi all,


I have a 2001 1150 GS and want to access the battery terminals to fit a pig tail lead (for an Antigravity jump starter lead permanent install). I do not want to remove the tank completely if I can avoid it or remove/disconnect anymore pipes or cables than I have too. If I just remove the tank bolt does that give enough free play to push the tank upwards and block it to access the battery terminals.
 
Why not fit the BMW jump start kit? Much easier and effective to use by the sounds of it. It fits on the starter cover and connects to the starter positive terminal to give a direct connection to the battery.

Not sure how the 23 year old plastic starter cover will take to having a hole drilled into it as it is now very, very brittle. I currently use the option of removing the starter housing cover and connecting + clip to starter and - clip to a suitable earth. I am now looking for a more permanent connection option

Mine’s 25yrs old and took it fine, but secondhand replacements are cheap…😊👍
 
I put my jump starter pig tail lead under my seat just in front of the fuse box. No need to remove the tank completely. Just take the bolt out and hold it up with a block of wood. Easy.
 
And be careful not to touch your spanner against anything metal……

If I’ve ever had to jump start mine I have clamped the positive crocodile clip onto a screwdriver, taped the exposed shaft, and pushed the end against the battery + not ideal but it’s worked.

The cover is cheap
A used one may be £30 or less, from Motorworks
The jump start connector from BMWs is the best option

Remove starter motor cover (one bolt) attach positive jump starter lead to live battery terminal that’s attached to the starter motor.

I fitted the BMW jump-node to a 2003 Ed80 Rockster last year - drilling the cover was fine.

can i ask how that works, i guess if you have a jump pack you put the positive cable on that silver bolt thats showing then the negative lead to a earth somewhere and thats how you jump the bike

That’s exactly how it works, and I had a weird experience l when I went to refuel a while ago. Battery had been charged, I thought, but the bike gave all the indications of a flat battery when I wanted to leave the forecourt. As luck would have it, a motorway recovery guy was using the car wash and had his jump pack in his van. It literally took 30secs to get the pack into place and fire it up which he was astounded by. He’d never seen a bike so easy to start…
