Hi Guys,

Just got my bike back from the dealer, there is an oil leak from the bell housing. I have had the rear crank oil seal changed under warranty and I changed the gear box seals last year, the bike has covered 29K miles. During that job, I noticed that the rear crank seal was a bit ‘weepy’ but I did not have the tools to fit the seal. When I changed the gearbox seals last time I followed the guidance from Haynes. I don’t want to strip as much of the bike down this time. Does anyone know if its possible to remove most to the bolts on the frame and hinge it out of the way enough to gain enough access to remove the gear box.

Cheers

Mark

In a word -NO !!

Crank seals are not as prone on these as are the gearbox seals.

When you replaced the gearbox seals did you fit the later "brown" ones or were they sourced else where ie "black" type. The brown variety are the latest type and appear to have sorted the very prone problem.

If the crank seal turns out to be at fault more than likely it hasn't been fitted correctly. The seal has to be preshaped on a special tool prior to fitment. If they haven't got the correct tool it could have flipped the sealing lip the wrong way.

Balancer shaft seals are pretty common and that lives directly at the base of the bell housing so have a look there.

On some of the '10 models there has been a recall for retorqing the right lower cam chain blade bolt which also lives in that area.

Best advice is to thoroughly degrease the engine and see what develops
