Hiya

I've got an 05 1200 with nearly 50k up it and I have recently started using a sat nav,I have tried using the socket near the headstock and the one under the seat for stwiched power but they are going on and off of there own accord,

sometimes the sockets will stay on for ages and then switchs off, turn ignition of and back on and it will come back on,maybe for 30 secs or for hours.

spoke to mike and he sez apart from a loose wire it may be a sign of the
zrf (I forget what he called it but I think it was 3 letters) unit starting to fail.

So,anyone else had similar thing,and sorted it?:nenau

That's the way they are designed. The CAN_BUS system switches these off about 20 secs or so after the ignition is off.

Easily got round by wiring across the batt and putting a 10 amp fuse in the circuit.

Do a Search there has been much chat about this in the past.

When's the last time your bike was connected to a dealer's GT1? There was one particular software upgrade in 2005 that caused the accessory sockets to shut down after a short period of time. It might well be that you need the software in your bikes ECU to be upgraded.

+1 on above, was an issue on early bikes, sorted with software upgrade. I run GPS from the headstock thing and it is purrfick. I run compressor from accessory plug and it too is purrfick. '05 R1200GS 85K kms.

Your bike is replicating exactly the same on-off-on-off shut downs as my old 04 1200GS displayed.

Early owners complained that their batteries were going flat whilst at rest. Mine never did.

In response, the Bavarian monkeys 'improved' the software so that it shut down anything non-essential.... The end result being that the bike would then sometimes shut down anything attached to the power sockets, which is what yours seems to be doing.

......So they further 'improved' the software to stop that happening.

However, it seems odd that a five year old bike has somehow missed its software updates, particularly if it has a dealer service record. A diagnostic check will tell you, for sure.

Are you sure there is not a small break or short in the lead between the GPS and the socket, which might lead it to short out? That would bring the same on-off-on-off result, too. Also, check the connections at the GPS end, too.

Is the outlet at the beak piggybacked off the socket under the seat? Check the lead there, too. If that, or the supply anywhere, has a small break it will trip the canbus, just as you describe.

My bike has not been on a GT1 for over 3 years, any work I don't do myself is done by Mike Pearce,I know he's not a BMW offical franchise but he has more experience and knowledge than anyone around here,100% bmw since he was 17 and only been on his own for about 2 years, most importantly I trust him,

he has diagnostic stuff and its going in for some work this weekend so will get him to have a look.

I have checked the wiring and can't see any visual signs of damage, there was corrosion on the rear of the socket under the seat and a wire came away when I pulled it out to splice a wire in for feed to the sat nav, did a proper job soldering new wires for thi and replaced connector to back of socket.

anyway the likelyhood of both sockets having dodgy broken wires is remote I reckon and at the moment I'm favouring the software or the control unit breaking down.

have wired it direct to the battery for now but its a pain,it means the zumo is constanly charging when the ignition is off.

You'll still need to take it to a franchised BMW dealership if, as I suspect, it needs a software upgrade.

It happened on my '05 bike too.
A thread was posted here, so do a search.

The important thing to know : when hooked up to the diagnostic equipment at your dealer, THE FAULT IS NOT RECOGNIZED, so nothing happens, and the need for an update isn't seen. The fault has to be remedied by 'forcing' the correction. As said, do a search.

When I went to my dealer, the error didn't show on the diagnostic computer. My dealer told me nothing was wrong :blast. Fortunately I'd read the thread on here. I had to insist that he call BMW Belgium, which he reluctantly did. Then he scribbled down some notes; there's a specific method of correcting this on/off behaviour. My bike then got hooked up again, and an hour later everything was solved.

It took BMW some time to write new software to remedy this problem. In the mean time I wired the accessory sockets directly to the battery. Didn't like losing GPS and autocom. As soon as the solution was posted here, IIRC this was late 2006, I went to my dealer.

The described method may have changed since then. Your dealer should know.

Good luck ! :thumb
