accomidation in switzerland

Hi, we are planning on going ot Switzerland in August, via the Ardeene in Belgium. We are traveling from the UK and i looking on recommendations on routes people have taken before. We'll have 5 or 6 days to get there and back.

I'll like to get in as many moutain passes as reasonable possible, recommanditions on hotels (in August i guess we'll have to book in advance?)

Are hotels expensive my uk standards? 2* or 3* should be fine, as we'll only be there 1 night i guess.

If anyone has any mapsource routes, that would be handy to look at.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaubenbühl_Pass was an excellent way to get from the Basel/Lucerne motorway to Meiringen where you have access to many of the higher passes.

If you can, try to stay in that part of Switzerland for 2 nights. That will give you a full day to leave your luggage in the hotel and enjoy a loop around the high passes.

If the Parkhotel is over your budget then have a look at http://www.booking.com/hotel/ch/tou...c6417e;checkin=2010-08-05;checkout=2010-08-06 which seems to be in a fab location, very cheap and has reasonable reviews.

I find the Swiss hotels bloody expensive and not the best quality but as I live here don't have to use them much. Actually your GPS is your friend as I usually use this as I don't plan my routes that rigidly. Much cheaper to stay in France / Germany / Italy and cross through Switzerland (spend max 1-2 nights here). Especially with the weak Euro.

Sometimes it's better to look at the smaller passes than the well known ones (which are full of traffic). I know the ones in West Switzerland eg. Jaun pass (between Interlaken and Bulle), Schwefelburg (near Freiburg/Bern), Petit and Grand St. Bernard (for routes to Chamonix), plan some of the route Napoleon if possible, if heading to Ticino use the Nufenen pass.
