On the other side of main drag into town from the Autantic is the Petit Auberge run by an english couple. http://www.hotellapetiteauberge.com/index.html
Stayed in both in the past and much prefer the Petite Auberge.

Hotel Les Colombes in Verdun is cheap, basic and has a garage. Not what you want in terms of french character, but fantastic location and the price is so cheap you can afford a pint of Kwak in the nearby bar.

Sent off a couple of emails for availability, I've selected Le petit Auberge in BSM to see what they have

Some grand riding round there - Cormet de Roselend is great, also Petit St.Bernard, Col de L'Iseran and Col de La Madeleine.
