I'm trying to make an Acer Aspire One work reliably with my wireless network. It's fine when the power lead is plugged in but intermittent when running on batteries. The latest driver for the WLAN chip (Atheros AR5007EG) from Acer is dated some time in 2008 and makes no difference. Has anyone a safe source of a more recent driver, or any suggestions as to why it's troublesome? It's not the router as an Advent laptop and Mrs Bear's Kindle connect reliably all the time.

In settings for the card deselect "allow windows to power off this device to save power"

That's not how it was phrased but it was the solution. In the depths of the device driver, under Advanced, are the power saving options. Selecting None rather than Maximum (presumably referring to the power saved) makes it work properly. It seems an odd default option as the Acer seems designed for gap-year students to email mummy for more cash from MacDonalds wherever in the world.

The setting isn't designed for the real world, it is to get the battery life figures up. It's a bit like manufacturer mpg figures ;)

Glad you found setting and it sorted it :D
