I'm not a great fan of top boxes, but they do have their uses, particularly if you use your motorcycle often for a multitude of purposes, such as a weekly trip to Sainsburys! So, my F650cs came equipped with the small, factory-fitted rear rack (max loaded weight 5kg), intended I believe to strap BMW soft luggage to it. I had an old, single-helmet-size, no-brand QD top box lying around the garage, and I found that by using some longer than usual bolts and large washers, I could attach the plastic top box fitting plate securely to gaps in the rack without any modification. All done in ten minutes, and as I say, the box is easily detached when not needed.
The motorcycle, if you can picture it, has a dummy fuel tank with a storage recess intended for a helmet or various BMW bags and after another rummage around, I found that I had an Oxford tank bag originally designed for scooters, which fitted perfectly in the space and with the addition of a small buckled strap, held quite secure. The bag can hold my waterproofs, a flask of coffee, camera, tyre sealant and a map in the clear pocket, so all really useful and at minimal cost too!
