Hi everyone,

I am currently prepping my 2005 Dakar for "the big trip" (Europe to Oz). Panniers are sorted (Overland Solutions - expensive but worth it!), visas and jabs are in the making & I've done a bit of maintenance mechanics so far.

What I'd like to sort out now is: Electrics.
I'm fed up with carrying all sorts of chargers, from electric toothbrush to laptop charger. I really had enough. (In case you wonder why I need an electric toothbrush: I had a nasty off with a 3x broken jaw... since then electric toothbrushes are the 'way forward' for me).

Anyway: I thought about fixing ALL chargers permanently to the bike, to get them out of the panniers (and therefore make packing a bit easier).

1st Question:
Where can I get a decent wiring diagram from? (And which repair manual do you recommend for it?)

2nd: "Current". How much AMPs does the Dakar actually produce? Can I charge a laptop and 4 AA batteries whilst riding?

3rd: Has anyone tried to put a switch in place, in order to switch off the headlights (necessary for some countries, where headlights need to be switched off during daytime)?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Was it Ram-Man had an all in one Bike mounted mobile device charger with all kinds of connectors to suit GPS, Mobiles, Laptops, Battery-Toothbrush etc...

Vendors of Innovations might be a good place to start looking..

:hogroast :hogroast :hogroast :hogroast :hogroast
Got it...Click HERE

Yup.....Qpac I think it was called...Steptoe has one .

IIRC though, Ram Man has stopped dealing with the company 'cos they pissed him about :nenau

Something like that might have been ideal though :nod

Qpac was just the powered lead for the Garmin Quest.

Hi CelticPixie,

I've not done much in the way of electrics on my 2002 F650GS but the bit I did was helped by the following link,

http://faq.f650.com/GSFAQs/Documentation_FAQ_GS.htm#Section: Electrical Docs.

Then pick, Section 2: Electrical Documentation.

You can download each individually or a full zip file in one go.

Wow thats usful cheers :thumb2 Funny what you just happen upon in this place.

Celtic Pixie, Welcome aboard.

I'm not so sure about a pre-made socket system. I'd be inclined to make somthing that does exactly what I'd be looking for, then connect it to the battery via a specific fused link and sepperate from any socket I might want to attach a heated vest 'or the like' to.

Have you thought about doing away with the rear seat and having a dedicated secure compartment for your charging requierments? BMW did at some point make a single front seat with a reasonable size storage box that fitted where the rear seat would have been. This if you could find one would I think be very usful (I saw a new single seat being sold on eBay about six months ago).
I have a Peli-Case fitted the the back of my 1200 'where the rear seat goes' I had originaly had the Idea to electrify it for charging batteries for radios etc, but as yet have not done this and just use it for carrying tools (for repairing my trainees bikes). This would be quiet an easy job if you simply cut away some of te rear seat and mounted it on the existing base.

Thanks for all your helpful answers!

I have done a bit of further research and found a little device from a comany called "Kensington".
They do a 70W charger which nearly fits everything (and whatever doesn't fit can be made to fit with a bit of McGyverism ;)
Input: 12V, 120V, 240V
Output: anything up to 12V
All connections are via little adaptor nibs – so one charger fits all sizes.

To make things easier, I might just add an auxiliary socket near the handle bars and then run a cable from there into the tankbag (where the Kensington charger will be).

I like the idea of a smaller seatbench, but then I can't take any pillions (and there might be some handsome company along the way ;)
