Hi there, I want to add a pair of 10 watt LED driving/spotlamps to my 2007 1200GS.
I'm buying a pair of lamps from Amazon, (already bought 4 sets for me and others, excellent quality, £38 pair)
Can I just wire them into the low beam headlamp feed? I usually use the sidelight wire with a waterproof illuminated switch (Amazon of course, bag of 10 for £7!) but these don't have a sidelight!
I've read a few posts about damaging the electronics though, hence my concerns. I've never used a relay, the sidelight circuits can handle another 20W as the existing bulbs are only 6W, led again.
Anything I need to do other than wiring in the lamps & switch as stated?
Thanks again, Mike. :D

You may be able to just use the accessory socket if they are only 6W each.. Certainly worth a try.

This is how I wired some non OE aux lights on my 1st GS. I simply bought a din plug and wired the lights into that via a handlebar switch.

This thread may help

Many thanks

These are the ones I use, as said I've fitted a few sets. Very well made, no problems with waterproofing or corrosion so far, first fitted them to my ZZR1200 3 years ago, just spliced into the sidelight feed via a fuse, and a small waterproof rocker switch. I tried several others but most were really tacky junk!

I would always use a relay triggered by the sidelight or headlight circuit.
The relay coil draws such a small amount of current that the can-bus does not have a problem.
For the sake of a cheap relay it is not worth the risk of the can-bus tripping out.

Hi, I was concerned about this can bus malarkay.. Its all a bit modern for me!
The 2 LEDs will draw 1.6A, there is a sidelight bulb and circuit (why?) so I'll use that, can I remove the front sidelamp bulb without getting any warning lights etc? That will drop the LED and sidelamp draw to 25W or 2A with the rear lamp included, can't remember if I'm using 2 or 5W fuse through a waterproof marine switch where the accessory plug now lives. I'll wire up a standard size cigar type socket, marine one again, permanent live so I can use camping kit and a USB connector without having the ignition on. I've done this on most of my bikes, but they are good old wires and fuses

The BMW socket for the satnav is a trailing socket behind and under the headlight unit .
Plugs to fit this socket are available from Nippy Normans.

My Garmin has got a bike mount that connects to the battery, just got pos & neg wires, then the actual satnav has got a few Ram mounts. I've had it on 5 bikes now, was a small fortune to buy with the car and bike mounts, plus I've added lifetime updates. but its still working without faults. I'll have a mooch at the harness, looks much neater!

If you use the BMW plug it will switch on and off with the ignition, or rather it will shut down 30 to 90 seconds after the ignition is switched off.
This is the delay on the can-bus shutting down, ( time seems to vary between bikes).

Can you tell me what colours I need to find, and is there a spare connector in place? Having trouble finding these connectors for accessories!

I think I've found the satnav plug, taped to the frame lh/lower side of the ignition switch, 3 wires, brown, blue/yellow and red/white. Ordered the kit shown, thanks.
Just the DRL's to wire in now, very easy to do, once I've replaced the alternator and belt...hopefully thats it and I can ride the bloody thing :thumby:

Yes that`s the one. Brown is Ground on BMW bikes and cars.
This feed is from the ZFE , ECU you will have to test which one of the other 2 wires is switched live.

I'm sure you will like them, the best value lamps I've seen. I've also bought a set of 5 waterproof connectors, £5.59 and a pair of same finish mounting brackets. £11.79 I'm fitting them to the crash bars, these need removing to do anything on the bike it seems, so I can unclip the connectors, no messing about. 2 connectors, lamps and brackets for about £40. :DD

No crash bars on a 701 to use those mounts. Mine will go on the side of the tower.
