If this has been covered elsewhere sorry (but I cant find it!)

I am looking to get some additional lights (spots) for my 1200GS. Went into BMW and they recken circa £500 for a halogen and a fog. Jesus....

Any non touratech suggestions.....also my mechanical knowledge is of the "where is the one switch variety"

Cheers all

Ditto to the HID.

I started by adding PIAA spots and Micro DE's but by far the biggest improvement has been the HIDs. :thumb

While also an advocate of fitting HIds to the bike let me answer your original question as well.

If you want to fit additional spots or fogs get one of Migsels excellent light bars and a set (or sets) of lights of your choice and forget about throwing good money away with your dealer.

You could have Hids light bar and lights for half what the robbing bar stewards are quoting you. :spitfire

My personal preference are PIAA's but the Misel bar can handle various types.

BTBR is your man!! There are a number of threads with his light jobs on the forum!!

Migsel bar, FF50's @ £35 ish and Micro DE's @ £57 ish and it's job done.

However, fit HID first because that will get you way way further down the road of sorting your lights out than the other option.

The micro de's are great for making your bike stand out and being seen by car drivers, but HID will be a revelation to you in terms of how far you can see.

HID set up is cheapest of all and the easiest. BTBR set up is the best part of £300. Sounds dear but he does do a great job of the wiring. Having done the job myself, I can vouch that it is a pain in the arse job and BTBR is justified in charging what he does. If you have the time though you can save a good amount of cash.

HID 1st then light bar and fogs if you want.

Not that I need to, but just to clarify my costs.

I charge £115 labour/parts to fit a custom made loom to the bike. The 'cost' of the parts is £25 alone.

Breaking that down even further, it takes 3 hours on the day to fit to the bike.

Prior to that it takes about an hour in advance of the day to wire the lights up with the custom made leads.

On top of that I have to make the loom, and this takes roughly 2 hours.

On the day you are supplied with copious amounts of tea or coffee, plus the now lengendry Mrs BTBR sausage sandwich. :clap Not included in the cost of the lights I know, but all part of the service. :bow

Now if you think that my labour cost is expensive, well I have a receipt here from a BMW dealer (who will remain nameless), and the cost on it is £362 inc VAT, just to fit and connect up one set of extra lights into the main beam circuit.

The lights that I supply are Hella FF50 & Micro DEs, these will cost you £118.36 and that includes the carriage costs to get them shipped directly to me.

Then we have the cost of the lightbar and Autoswitch (1150) or PIAA switch (1200) So allow another £100 for those items.

This gives a grand total of £333.36

BTBR,

You don't have to justify your prices but, having now seen them, I think they are VERY reasonable and everyone who has one of your installations seems well chuffed.

I would have your set-up, but convert the Micro DE's to 35W HID and the Main and Dip to 50W HID (Colebatch and Les) - this is what I've done, and the cost is about £200 on top of the original installation just for the parts.

For general riding the 'triangle' of Dip and Micro DE's makes you much more visible and for seeing on dark roads 50W HID Main and the HID's in the Micro DE's is the absolute Dogs!

For anyone who can't/does not want to do it themselves, BTBR's service (and price) sounds fantastic!

:nenau ...He obviously didn't like me...:(

It still perplexes me why people want to bollock loadsa lights on their bike, so it ends up looking like something from 'close encounters of the third kind'...:nenau

You only need to HID your lamps. It's more effective and cheaper. Makes perfect sense to me...
