Does anyone have an opinion of the merits or not of the black finish on the ADV engine, the engine is only available in black nowadays ??

Thanks in advance.

Black engines look great, pity that BMW didn't black the heads & cylinders also. Keep thinking that the black swingarm & bevel box from a Rockster would compliment the black engine?

Black is the only colour:thumb

I second Steve. If only the whole engine and trans. were too, oh and the wheel hubs of course!

i had a black engine on a 1983 gt750/4 kwak.

looked absolute shite after 10 years

grey more like

Black engine.........

Only looks good when new in the showroom

My latest GS1150 has it and it's a pain to keep clean & shiny.

The silver looks better longer and is easier to keep looking smart.

Surely you can still order the GSA with the silver option.

IMHO the Black GSA engine looks like a dog's dinner with black/blue anodised and silver all jumbled up.

The silver engines and blue anodised look far better......

If Black engines were better...........why does the 1200GS have a silver one? Natural evolution and all that.

Jimb............saw my Red1150GS in Rainbow this afternoon, with the silver engine and it still looks great...............shall I buy it back?

I have a black engine and I think it is far better looking than silver and it doesnt get those orrible petrol stains the silver ones get .:D

and as everyone knows black is faster:)

I have a Black engine on CC II and it looks great.....apart from the Gearbox on the Offside....:(

For some reason it's gone a dull matt black.....

I think Den has a similar problem......and it's not due to lack of keeping it clean....

CC

Thanks Fella's

The ADV is now only available with a black engine and black front suspension link its not made in silver any more, i had heard that this finish is not so much a paint as a baked on coating that can crack and then flake off but haven't seen it.

The only color options for a new GSA are silver and black and both with a black engine, the black engine and paint is too much black and I don't like the silver, I may well do a Johnnyboxer and have it repainted red. Johnny's original RED 1150 is in rainbow now and it does look well.

Has anyone had experience of this finish flaking off and what did you do about it ???

Cheers

Sorry but I am too busy riding the thing to give a shit about it being clean and shiny.

My GS is now 2 years old on a black engine, still looks great BUT does take a lot more keeping looking great than silver does. Not got any signs of flaking (yet) tho'.

Seems best way to keep it looking good is give it a spray with "Mr Sheen" or the like after washing it, not too time consuming & the silicone finish means it's easier to wash the muck off next time.

As for the "natural evolution" of the 1200 engine Johnny....... nuf said ;)

Good for you................if you like riding around on a bike that looks a mess

Some of us do like keeping our bikes clean (as well as riding them)...........it's an extension of bike ownership.

Don't knock those who take a pride in their bikes..............we can
still ride as fast, hard and dirty as you do !!!!!!!!!!

No problems with my black engine, like previous post, I wish BWM had put black transmission on it too

6K miles on my black engined adv - the finish seems fine so far - i am not one for filthy lookin bikes either

Theres a member on here, who had a problem with the back end of his bike [gearbox and final drive to bve specific], and when he got the warranty parts ordered he asked the dealer to fit black gearbox/shaft and final drive housings [I think they were from a rockster or sommat]
