Somewhere I saw a picture of an 1150 Adventure with black padded protectors fitted to the widest part. Who makes them?

No. They were about inch thick padded plastic jobbies that were moulded to fit around the corners that dented sometimes.

Is it these Touratech things?
They are bits of ABS plastic which stick to the tank with double sided tape. No padding involved but they spread the force if the corner of the tank hits the ground and avoid it denting or creasing.
I put a set on my ADV tank because of a month when I dropped it twice while at a standstill
. Just stopped it rolling onto the tank on the second one because of the camber of the driveway I was standing in was not on my side. I think that's what they are designed to do but they could be useful if you slid the bike down the road on one side and were worried about saving your tank while your rocker covers ground away on the tarmac.
They ain't pretty, I keeps them under my Baglux unless I'm taking the bike down to see Steptoe for a service.

I considered them but was put off by the fitting method. I'll risk a dent and repair rather than live with the idea of what's growing under the protectors where the crap can sit unseen (look at the TT fitting instructions).
This seems to be the solution, get your knee down first and if that fails fend off the ground with your hand!

On gathering crud under them - yup they will. If I wasn't wearing the Baglux cover over them I'd have put them on with industrial strength Velcro for ease of removal and washing.

Now having looked on the web site I see they were not available until Feb. 2006. Mystery solved and I, innocent of all charges, price is a shock but looks as if they'll do the job. Anyone thinking of my xmas present this will do!, probably get delivered in time for xmas 2007.

Yes, must get out more, I was looking at the 2006 PAPER catalouge, and they do not appear here nor in the accompanying price list. Now having looked on the web site I see they were not available until Feb. 2006. Mystery solved and I, innocent of all charges, price is a shock but looks as if they'll do the job. Anyone thinking of my xmas present this will do!, probably get delivered in time for xmas 2007.

I dropped my GSA in Morocco twice (in 10 minutes ), the second time on a bik flat rock. I've also dropped it a couple of times in the UK.
Each time the standard BWM engine protector bars have prevented the bike rolling any further over and denting the tank
. I think you'd have to drop it sideways towards a down hill slope for it to roll over that far. 
If you are really concerned then ride with the panniers on. You'd have to flip it to dent the tank and then that would be the last of your worries
