Advanced riding course

Advice please:

Key difference between Rospa and IAM?
Do insurance companies typically discount for either?

Is there a version that is taught more intensively as opposed to over 9 months?

( I'm not trying to short circuit experience I'm probably going to have surplus vacation time and this seems like good use of it).

It depends what you want to get out of it.

If you want the social side - go and meet the groups and see which you feel is best.

If you only want to take the test once and don't want to carry on being retested every 3 years then IAM. If you do want to keep it current then ROSPA is graded and retested every three years.

There is no set time to do a course - it only depends on the time you and your observer can put into it. I joined IAM in March and in the next month hope to be putting in for my test.

Insurance companies - I had ROSPA gold for the car and found that the insurance companies offering discount were the more expensive ones anyway and often there were cheaper providers who did not recognise the qualification. I would suggest that if the only reason you are doing it is to make your insurance cheaper - don't bother.

If you want to improve your riding skills find an advanced tutor that does one to one there are plenty of good ones out there

A friend and I want to do bike safe ride so perhaps will do that first.

I did the IAM skill for life in about 2006 and my tutor was a bit of a muppet a power hungry midget. Some years later when i started blood biking I told the standards officer i was disillusioned with the local IAM group and he suggested I did the RoSPA training, which I did and through enjoyed. What I have subsequently learned is the important thing is to join a vibrant/progressive group.

That said I still believe the RoSPA approach is better, if you really want to improve. But any good quality training is worth doing.

Absolutely agree: it all comes down to the people.
Can't comment on RoSPA but if you are looking in the London area LAM is the place to be.

I would definitely recommend RoSPA and train with a police/retired police motorcycle instructor if you can. I don't think you'll find better training and you'll have a great time learning a wide range of bike skills. Refresher training and retesting no later than 3 yearly intervals will ensure your riding remains at a high standard

There are many people out there who are excellent RoSPA tutors who are not retired police instructors, some hold the RoSPA Diploma qualification, others are Senior Tutors or they could be a Tutor.

The IAM are now putting standards in place to ensure the consistency of their Observers around the country as it has been a bit of pot luck in certain areas.

Ive recently completed the skills for life with my local group.

Excellent group in my view.

I would suggest doing the bikesafe day, I feel this gives a fair insight into advanced riding.

Totally agree. Do a Bikesafe day to get a feel.

Then go RoSpA or IAM, whichever group you feel comfortable with, but don't just do it for the insurance pricing - unless you think you are already a superb rider and have nothing to learn.....we all do!

BTW, IAM Surety (now Cornmarket) say they will match the best quote you get from anybody else (subject to odd postcode/garaging issues) . I'm on £100, NCB protected, legal included............

I did my IAM in my tin can and they offer insurance through IAM Surity who will normally undercut your best quote, but you have to remain a member to do so.

Why? They (IAM Surety/Cornmarket) admit freely that they are based in Northern Ireland and don't follow, merely react to the mainland UK market and the quotes that you can get elsewhere. You tell me a company that "does give you a quote that is cheaper than elsewhere in the first place" and we'll all be there straight off. Does yours?? I don't think so

Yes I can ... I have a VW camper van, two insurance companies I use specialise in motorhome insurance!

I get a renewal, I go to the other, they ask what I've been quoted, I don't tell them, I just ask them to give me their best quote .... they put me on hold, come back and give me their premium.

It's either cheaper or it isn't

If it's cheaper I'll go with them, if it's not I tell them I'm sorry, but you can't compete, they never drop their price ....

I don't want cheap insurance .... I want good insurance

Edit .... as an IAM Examiner I've always managed to get cheaper and better insurance than any IAM 'offers'
