NOTICED THAT MY MATE EWAN MCGREGOR HAD TOURATECH PANNIERS FOR HIS TRIP ROUND WORLD. I HAVE ORDERED A FULL SET OF BEE EM ALUMINIUM PANNIERS FOR MY ADVENTURE. I HAVE THE RACK FOR THE SIDES FITTED ALREADY AND WHILST EXAMINING IT I COULDNT HELP THINKING HOW FLIMSY THE FRAME IS. WHAT CONCERNS ME? I AM GOING ON A TRIP WITH A LOT OF GRAVEL, I KNOW I AM GOING TO DROP IT...LAST THING I NEED IS KIT THATS GOING TO EXPLODE ON IMPACT. I'M SURE PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCES TO SHARE. LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING THEM.

Flimsy looking frame and all....absolutely. However in my limited experience this seems to handle vibration stress better without cracking the welds, also when falling the pannier has simply detatched itself from the frame with minimal damage. Now whether it will do this everytime I cannot say, I have only dropped the bike twice with them on, and then at gentle speeds.

THANK YOU, THATS VERY GOOD INFO. YOU'VE GIVEN ME A FAIR BIT OF CONFIDENCE , MUCH APPRECIATED!

Sold mine and put some Verns on as the BM ones didn't survive a simple drop! Replaced by insurance claim, so my buyer got new boxes and frame!

IMHO, total crap! If you want something that looks good they're fantastic. If you want something robust and that does the job, look elsewhere!

Beemer Panniers

My top-box (large right pannier used) took flight on the highway after the plastic lock snapped. The replacement under warranty has an extra screw bracket to hold it on to the frame.

Last week coming back from the Qatar GP, the left pannier lid came off in my hand as the flimsy plastic hinges snapped. The new pannier above has a riveted cable attached so the lid does not fall back.

What is the cost for new hinges?

As an add-on, anybody have an electronic copy of the 1150GS wiring diagram or a link to get it?

Advrider..

Seen a report of a guy suffering the same thing.. on Advrider.com

He lost his top box, plastic bits snapped. Having looked at the build quality of the BMW ali panniers, when I do swap from the black system ones, it will be too either Hepco & Becker , Zega or
the US ones, who's name i have forgotten for the moment.. dough!..

Built better.. though apparently Vern's ones are blooming tough judging from comments.

Thanks lads, I will let you know how I get on with the Beemer ones!

The hinge problem (due to the lid being opened over 90-degrees) was sorted ages ago.

When I bought my panniers in Aug last year they came pre-fitted with the retaining wire and so the additional stress is never put on the hinge.
The wires have been available from BMW (for retro-fitting to older panniers) FOC for some while now however prior to this I had made a couple of sets and sent them out to people.
