Hi guys n gals

i was at work today when lightening struck my brain
why not start a small buisness building adventure motorbikes for round the world travel etc. effectively buying standard low mileage machines and kitting the bikes out with the equipment needed for off roading and global travel. I know there is going to be a large amount of people wanting to prepare bikes themselves but i think there will also be a large amount of folks that would want to bike an adventure bike already prepared and ready to go.

So what do you guys think do you think its a viable idea or am i in dream world
any ideas or suggestions would be great.

thanks

stephen

Strange

Strange -

i am keen on doing a proper big tour i.e. Alaska - South America / Silk Route etc next year but not having the expertise / time I was thinking how the fek would i know what i would need to add to a stock GSA. Loads of terms used here and on the tour forums that mean nothing too me. I was thinking that when i needed it I was going to have to post something here and I know that amongst the pee taking (which i don't mind) i would get some good advise.
I know there's touratech - but do they do an end to end service i.e. tell you what you need and fit it.

enough rambling but I would imagine there is a market for it. You would need to allow people to provide their own bikes as an option as I would want to use a brand new GSA (if i can get my leg over) :thumb2

I think if you get your leg over she will stop you having the bike...

there are 2 sides to the coin

If your customers are called ewan and charley and theyve an open cheque book your laughing.

Try and start your business as a hobby perhaps evenings and weekends, dont give up your dayjob until theres work comin outa your ears.

When youve a hobby that you are getting paid for, thats a real job.

Personally i like sleeping(not shagging) and getting paid for it, it happens sometimes.

The problem is all companies selling adventure kit will tell you that you need everything. They are in business for that very reason. They'd be out of business if they told you to travel as light as possible with soft luggage on a Jap bike because you can get spare parts easier in Africa and East of the Urals.

The really hardcore people are travelling the globe on light, cheap bikes with very few accessories. Building a real adventure bike and flogging accessories are almost mutually exclusive.

You wouldn't believe the crap that I've told people to junk off their bikes. Most bolt on stuff is useless at best. Master cylinder covers are my pet hate.

Mudguards on the front of the front mudguard and spotlights which weigh half a ton are mine:P.....Anyway, if the sun comes out get your kettle on:thumb

Back to the original point.
Depending on the bike used, a major part of the actually doing any trip is the preparation. If someone else does it all for you then you won't have a clue how to fix something when it goes wrong and Aunty's not there:thumb

Obviously some bikes don't have the luxury of made to measure pannier frames etc. but any half decent fabricator can knock those up. Most bikes need sub frames strengthening etc etc.

If you're interested in setting up a business to bolt on bling then you'll be wasting your time, as even the most numpty Essex GSer can do that:D

So I'd suggest, if you've not already, you first take off on a hard overland trip yourself and learn what really goes wrong in the field:thumb

essex gser

to quote timolgra....

question, have you met Chad from essex, he's a really big fescker and he can run really fast and loves burning things...hmmm

could you make one in to a teapot lid?:augie

I've been calling you all the names under the sun. Miserable fecker, last time I do anything like that for anyone, hasn't even said thankyou, b'stard.

Then I saw the nice package sat in the workshop ready to go (for the last two weeks:rolleyes:)

I'm out tomorrow, but I'll post it on Monday, promise:thumb2

No reason why you can't give it a go.
There are a few folk around that do the same thing for expedition 4x4's.
Speak to them for advice - they should be helpful as you're not going to be competing with them.
Assuming you already have suitable premises, the only up front outlay would be some advertising.
Nothing to lose really.
