HI All,i want to put the Adventure low 1st gear ratio in my std 6 speed 1150gs 2001.
Ive got the std 6 speed overdrive box with the tall 1st gear.
I thought i would need the 2 matching 1st gear cogs and the selector maybe, anyone done it?
Better still do you have any part numbers?
many thanks Paul
btw i did search but couldnt find nowt.

I did this mod a few years back - it is far from simple and was very expensive - my subconscious has blocked out the actual cost...

Thread on ADVrider here.

I did a post showing the internal swop in pictures. It's in the tech section somewhere.

Thanks Neil

i did a search but couldnt find nowt, i found a post from advrider which mike told me about, but they were talking thousands..
I'll keep fishing.
Is this something you would do if i delivered the box over to you?And any idea what the cost is?
Ive a trip to southern italy and ireland to do, then she comes to bits in november, ive just stripped and rebuilt the final drive to be safe,so thats all done.
Many thanks Paul

How do you know if you have the low 1st gear already? I change up almost instantly and have nothing to compare it to.

Check your VIN number on the BMW computer, it'll give you the exact spec of the bike

One of my GSA's has it and the other doesn't...............personally I find very little difference and I wouldn't go to the effort of changing a single gear cog

I must admit

i havnt tried the adventure low 1st gear, it may be an idea to try it first.
I just find crawling through london traffic a pita, and thought how much nicer a lower 1st gear would be.
Also i want to strip and check the box anyway, to make sure all's well as a routine winter job.
I could change the final drive relatively easily but that will affect all the ratios, and prob cock up the mpg in top gear.
food for thought.hmmm.

Gears

Have a go on mine Paul, I've got an 1100 bevel box on the back which is brilliant in traffic and not too bad in sixth. Only cost me £140 and been brilliant you might find the adventure gear too low. This lower gearinfg must help with clutch life as min... not musent say it or we all know what will happen!!.

The problem is you have to get someone to split the intermediate shaft & put it back together - the intermediate shaft you want for this wasn't ever made by BMW, so it's a job for someone who knows their way around the oilhead gearbox and has the skill and confidence to pull a 'non-service' part to pieces and reassemble it.

There are also two main versions of gearbox (they changed in about 2003 IIRC) and the internals are not compatible. I was lucky in that Anton Largiader was intrigued by the idea and did me a great deal on the job, but it was still very expensive, when you include the new parts that I felt it was false economy not to fit. The cost wasn't too much of a factor to me as I don't intend to sell the bike, but you'd never see your money back, if that's an issue.

As a modification I can thoroughly recommend it and I've had 25k + trouble free miles from the gearbox since...

as i understand it

The 1 st gear is part of the shaft itself, is it just a case of removing the bearings off the shaft and putting the gears 2 3 4 5 6 back onto the new shaft, refitting the bearings, and the same with the other shaft?

The gears aren't all on the same shaft. :D They're spread about a bit.

feck me

ive been searching for hours, top man.
found this too, very informative
I'll give Daves bike a blast and try that, looking at the ratios on the graph, that may be an easy solution.
Bizarrely an 1150 rt has a final drive 2.91 ratio, against the 2.82 of the gs1150.The 1100gs has a ratio of 3.00

Yes, the first gear and the intermediate shaft are a single piece - this is from memory (& mine is far from reliable :D) of the explanation Anton gave me. The intermediate shaft is pressed together and was apparently quite a challenge to get apart, but he managed it eventually. It is then a case of transferring the selected ratios to the 'low ratio' intermediate shaft and pressing it all back together, fitting the new cog and reassembling...

Neil's thread seems to refer to fitting Adv gears to a std box - so you'd end up with low first and low top, rather than the low first and high top you're after.

I think ...

I think the gearbox mod could be a bridge too far for me,getting the shafts apart?,heaven knows how if they are pressed together.
I think i'll try Daves bike for size, and or try an 1150rt final drive, thats halfway between Dave's 1100 bevel and a std 1150gs.

You'll never look back, if you like it I'll swap it for yours (if you clean it first!).
Be interested to see what an RT box would be like on an 1150 gear box.
Dave GS (are you comming on thursday?, if not why not (no camping!).

Last year I put my 1150GS final drive onto my 1150RT. Both are 2002 models. There was no difference. Revs were the same in all gears at all speeds - as close as I could tell by looking at the rev counter anyway.

Riding both bikes back to back I see no difference between the gearing at all. Both have a 1st gear way too tall for London traffic (where I work) but 6th is a peach on the motorway.
