Copied from a post on the ADV forum:
Okay, here we go ...
First, two difficulties with this setup:
1) The right side rack could not be mounted with the passenger foot peg in place as I have the "Vario Mounting Kit" which has different peg hangers that are in the way on the right hand side, so be aware of that when considering this kit. I just removed both passenger foot pegs for now until I have a solution as I generally don't need them.
2) I could not install the lock cylinders in the latches. These latches are different from the ones I had on the Adventure luggage on my F800GS, I think they are better, they are definitely slightly safer (the old ones could easily be defeated with a small screwdriver, for these you need at least a big screwdriver to break the plastic parts). But - the lock cylinders I got with them seem to be too short. I can't get them pushed in so that the last "retainer clip" actually catches on the inside. Also, from all I can see, they turn the wrong way for locking/unlocking to actually work with the parts inside. Luckily the latches can be removed from the inside of the case and I could get a good look after an initial scare where I pushed the lock in and then could neither turn it nor remove it ... removing it from the box and pushing it back out then worked though. Man I was swearing like hell when it got stuck with the case closed - I thought I had just ruined either a lock or case ...
So, here are some quick snaps from the setup in my drive way, excuse the cars, as I didn't want to ride with the cases because I couldn't lock the latch that holds the case to the rack I didn't feel it was safe riding with them. Therefore no pictures in nice surroundings - that'll come when I get the final snags worked out.
The width is pretty much exactly 98cm which was my absolute acceptable maximum.
What I like about them:
good mounting system, the racks are very high quality, very solid, everything fits very, very nicely
sensible shape, size and width; they are roughly 80L overall, very usable volume as they are boxy with no odd corners or weird shape
I can likely fit a Kriega pannier bag (40L expanded, 30L not expanded) inside both panniers; I have one on order and will confirm whether and how well it will fit, from the specs it will fit in both, one expanded, one not
they are natural aluminum, not black or dark anodized or powdercoated; on dark material every scratch and rub is very visible and annoys me until they look like complete shit, then I don't care anymore, but until then it's annoying; would have loved clear anodizing, but as I plan to only ever use them with liner bags mentioned above, I don't care too much
same key as ignition
can be taken off without unloading
the racks have a cross brace which is installed low to create a stable frame
they don't get in the way of the passenger pegs (once I can fit them ... :lol3)
they have tie down loops and as they are natural aluminum I will have no concerns scratching the hell out of the lid when I strap something on top
the lids are fairly shallow, which puts most of the storage space in the lower box
And likely more once I use them more. Most of you know them anyways as they are close to the old adventure cases, although I'd say they are built a tiny bit better and the latches are better than on the old ones. Will have to see how they work out in reality.
The downside is that they are very expensive, $400 to $500 more than most aftermarket setups but for me they combined most of what I wanted so that's why I ordered them. Now I only need to solve the little snags mentioned above and I'm good to go.
If they ever break I can likely replace them with Globescouts as these guys will probably make their panniers fit for the new GSA mounting system anyways.
One more tiny little downside: I can open them and maneuver the lids around the pillion grab handles, but I can't open them completely from one side if I have my Givi V46 top case installed. Have to unlatch both sides and place the lid on the passenger seat or so. Works fine with that.
