Hey All

A while back I bought an adventure rack for my standard GS off of ebay. It wa s pretty cheap as it had been in a fall and one of the pannier attachment rails was all buckled.

Anyway I'm just about to sort it and I need a bit of info before I go mad with a mallet, vice and hacksaw. I was planning on trying to strighten out the rail but it's pretty bad and it occurred to me that I may not need to and could probably just get away with hacking it off.

Unfortunately I have'n taken a pic of my actual rack but below is a pic with the bit I'm talking about highlighted.

As I don't and have no intention of using BMW Adventure panniers, I use TRAX, can I hack off the offending rails without causing any fitting issues ???? i.e. are these rails just used for attaching the panniers.

Any info before I go mad with a mallet greatly appreciated.

I may be talking out of place here....but I think those 'bracket' sections are only there to fix the secondary rack that holds the BMW topbox, so could be removed.

However, the question would be are they also offering a secondary strengthening or bracing to the rack?....that I’m not too sure of?

….not sure I’ve helped much! Sorry. :blast

The bit you've highlighted is to fix the top box mounting bracket (available separately) so hack away :D

Its stainless steel. try straightening it first. Stainless is a soft material and easy to work with but marks easily. See if you can borrow a nylon faced hammer or do you know a tin basher.

It you saw the strip off that you have highlighted then you will have lost strapping / bunge locations and have a lot of weld to dress up.

Thanks guys, tried straightening it with a vice and a rubber mallet and some serious force but it was so badly bent in a "wavy" way that it just didn't look right. Angle grinder chopped it easily and an hour or so of metal filing and wet and dry has done a decent pre powder coating job.

It's a bit lame but can anyone post some detailed pics of how they attach their racks to their Adventures. I've a suspicion that one or two of the mounting points are used by the Trax side pannier mounts I have so some customisation might be needed.

Cheers
