For those of you who have had experience of fitting Adventure tanks on 'normal' 1150GS.

I bought an Adv tank of the 'for sale' section of this board last summer, but have only just got round to fitting it, ready for this year's big tour.

Trouble is.... I can't make it fit!

When sliding the tank on, the rear mounting lug, no where near lines up with the bracket on my bike frame. The tank would have to be forced at least 3/8 of an inch to the left to make the tank fit, and if I do that, then the inner side of the tank would be pressing very hard onto the battery, which wouldn't be good! Also, due to the same 'twist'... when the tank is offered up, the right side is almost fully located into the rubber beak joint, while the left side is still 1/2" back! Basically I cannot see how this tank could possibly fit.

Has anyone else doing this conversion had similar problems, and if so, did you manage to recify it?

The tank doesn't appear to have been damaged, but I suppose if it had been on a bike that had been crashed, it could have been twisted in some way, that was not noticeable until trying to fit it.... as now!

I'm really p***ed off obviously. I had it repainted Mandarin, bought new decals, refixed badges, repaired bad threads on pump locating studs, and never thought to dismantle my bike first, as I just assumed it would go straight on.

Any views, suggestions!

I've Fitted an ADV tank on my standard GS without any problems, and i've never heard of anyone else having problems , it should be a straight fit

Me too, it's a straight swop. It's probably objecting to being painted Mandarin :monkeypiz

Sorted.... well sort of!

I've contacted the GSer that sold it to me, and he had no hesitation in saying he'll refund me in full, which is as good as I could hope for. He did not know that the tank was a bad one, as it wasn't off a bike of his. Anyway, it definately is a dud, as there's no way it would fit on, and he's been v honourable about it.

The bad thing, is that I'm now Adv tankless, so if any of you know of one for sale, then please let me know, so that I can get it fitted for this year's tour.

Acually Timolgra... the Mandarin colour proved to be the only thing good about it..... The finest GS colour ever mixed! And when I do get another Adv tank... Mandarin it's gonna be!!!

Thanks for the replies.

How much do you want to sell it for - tell the origanal owner i'd like to buy it please :thumb

Forgive me Steppers, but just a quick thought...(they do happen occasionally!!)....this gap.....it wouldn't have anything to do with the rubber bit (the bush) that the tank fixing bolt goes through not being fitted would it? (ie its fallen off)...as I said, just a thought

Ah, so it does, sorry about that Tarka / Steptoe, must put my reading eyes in when surfing :o

Tank twister

Thanks for all the replies and help.

Have taken a few measurements from my standard tank and my Bro's Adventure tank (which fits straight on my bike) and it's the arm at the rear which bolts to the frame, that is at fault. Although it doesn't appear to be bent, it is clearly in the wrong place! Way too far forward and to the left. It's all very strange.

The vendor is refunding me, but it means I've got to try and find another.

Oh well.
