Just got a new (bloody expensive) adventure topbox and noticed that the key hole protectors are much better than the rubber ones on my paniers. Does anyone know if you can get these little 'hard plastic' ones as an extra?
Also there is a piece of black plastic bolted on next to the lock on the top box main body, this doesnt appear to have a purpose or am I missing something? I even read the instructions and its not mentioned!
Cheers,

Andy

Hi mate, you can buy the plastic ones from your friendly dealer. There was a thread on it a couple on months back with the part number

The plastic thingy that serves no purpose is a vent to stop the panniers imploding when at high altitude ;)

Thanks guys, if its to stop the top box imploding at altitude how come theres none on the panniers?
Will see if I can find the previous thread. :blast

Fitted from 09 model year onwards I suspect, bound to be able to retrofit them to panniers not already equipped, just need a part no. from your local friendly BuMW dealer...and a drill, similar story with the lock covers I expect.......but you probably won't need the drill ;)

Had this happen in the high Sierras in Spain. Tops of Givi boxes actually bent inwards and couldn't get them open.

Hope you've left the valves open to equalize the pressure................top shelf eh? ;)

I bought the following :

Good luck

does anyone know if BMW have sorted the locks out, the ones that open with the little black key cover on the new boxes if you don't know what I mean.

I had the lock problem and wrote to BMW about it some months ago. Got a "nice" letter back a week later saying this was being looked into. Well time has passed and nothing has been changed. Only one of my pannier locks is "ok" so I stuff all my gear in that and leave the others empty, when out and parked up. I pointed out that they advertised the locks as "safe and secure" which they were not. I could go on but....:blagblah

When I picked up my bike/panniers recently, was told by the dealer the little bit of black plastic was a vent but just designed to let the case breathe... apparently older cases suffered sometimes from getting damp on the inside in certain climates so by putting the vent there it can let the moisture out safely and stop the contents getting all fousty... not sure but I partly recall hearing mention of gore-tex ... perhaps there's a thin piece of the material in the vent.
