Hi

Anyone got any suggestions:

29,000 mile on clock on GS 1150. Clutch started slipping when in hard exceleration in top gear and Im currently in Austria with a 900 mile return journey to make.

Can anyone pass on advice to my wife.

Mal

Er ...

... don't accelerate hard in top gear :nenau

On a more serious note, it should cope ok with a 900 mile trip. My 1100 slipped for about 6 months before I scraped up the readies to have it changed. If it gets worse, you'll have to deal with it; if it doesn't then you'll be able to sort it out at home :augie

Be genital with it don't labour the engine be in the right gear at the right time.
Also try using clutch less gear changing up the box. I wish you all the best and hope you make it back ok :D

Make sure the clutch fluid level isn't to high in the reservour, it needs to be half way, not overfull.

It could be oil leaking from a seal onto the friction plate. if it is, take the starter motor off and empty a can of brake cleaner into the clutch unit as you revolve it by hand in gear by means of turning the rear wheel with the clutch pulled in. Easier said than done if your by yourself :D

That's about all you can do as a way of a get you home bodge.

And don't use the clutch to change gear except when pulling away, use clutchless gear changes. And be gentle.

We'll all be willing you home, like the crews on the airfield as the lancasters all try and get back after a bombing mission .:D

Be genital with it Steve
You mean, try not to cock it up?.:aidan

Check handguard not fouling clutch lever or,as mentioned, too much clutch fluid.
Can you see any oil leaking from between the motor and gearbox.
Looks like you're going to have a dull, very careful ride home.Minimal RPM and as few gearchanges as possible.
Are you sure its the clutch though?.
It has been known for the driveshaft to break its bonding/cush drive rubber and give similar symptoms as clutch slip.
Remove cable tie on bevel drive gaitor and smell for burnt rubber.

... Many thanks for the reassuring advice, I'm now home safe and sound. Didnt slow me up too much getting home, my only troubles seem to be on the French side - the tunnel crossing home !! Clutch is probably due to wear and tear, Im good with the spanners but just too hard on the gas, and thought I was back on my motox bike riding along the passes! This probably triggered the slipping, but still managed to do 80 on the way home and looking now to replace the clutch, it only has a slight slip.
I had the opportunity to hire the new 800 for a couple of days, but still in love with my old bird. Got a bit of stick from the japanese bike riders that travelled with me. Had a fantastic holiday with 2,800 miles under my belt in 8 days.
