I'd like to do a self guided tour of Ireland. I've never been before so any advice would be very welcome please.

Thinking of arriving at Dun Laoghaire at about 1200 on a Saturday and leaving the same place at about 1315 the following Saturday.

In between I'd like to see as much as possible but I also want time to take in the scenery and attractions along the way. I'd like to stay in 3 star hotels, B&B, etc. as long as there is somewhere safe to leave the bike.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks in anticipation!

i suggest a circut of ireland.1.dubin out n11,over wicklow gap to 2kilkenny. on to waterford and dunmore east, on to kinsale cork. on to kerry. ring of kerry. on to adare limerick. on to the burrin co clare. on to sligo and donegal.work your way around north. try farmhouses b&b ,bike always safe

Turn left in Dun Laoghaire and keep the water on your left all the way around until you get back to Dun Laoghaire. B&Bs and 3star hotels very plentiful. No need to book in advance. No bike security problems outside the main cities.

Have fun,
Kieran.

+1 on what TK advises. :thumb2

Laterooms should get you some great deals on fine hotels if you can get internet access along the way. Book that nights hotel before you leave your hotel in the morning and you could make some serious savings.

Good quality B&B's are plentiful in Ireland and you won't have to book. Safe parking of the bike shouldn't be an issue.

If you have a Garmin GPS then between us all we should be able to give you waypoints to some scenic places all around the country. :thumb2

As above, west is something special,it's almost a different country. Try to take in Beara peninsula too in West Cork, scenic with character. I'd be carefull of other road users though, tractors etc are a law unto themselves and likely to just veer across the road into a field as you overtake them without any warning so keep those senses alert, its just that things in general are less disciplined over here. The country is full of history, its all around you- whether it be the post glacial landscape or whats been left behind from previous inhabitants in the form of castles etc. I find it interesting to try and visiualise what the landscape and life would have been like for the inhabitants of those ruined castles /monasteries etc when they were new and very isolated when compared to modern times. If that grabs you a bit it's worth doing a bit of research beforehand to give the experience that extra depth.

If your heading North into Co. Down, if it's possible, I could meet up with you for a time (work and family commitments permitting) and show you some sights and some very scenic routes.

Are you on you own, with a pillion or other riders?

PM me with a mobile and I'll get back to you.

Dublin has lots to do and is tourist orientated but a tad expensive, Cork is a beautiful small city and a stunning west coast,as others have suggested the West is beautiful, virtually unspoilt and rugged, i would tend to stick to the coast right the way round (nothing wrong with the midlands)but due to you're timeframe.,don't forget to check out the Giants causeway (world heritige site) its on the Antrim coast road, voted one of the top 10 driving roads in europe by Jeremy Clarkson, wherever you go im sure you'll enjoy it :thumb2
