Hi GUYS,
I have only had my BMW for a few months and only been in Australia for three years so could do with a bit of advice if you have the time.
On Wednesday I was knocked off the bike on a roundabout by a 91 year old almost blind granny who doesnt stop at roundabouts she just smashed me out of the way and kept going fortunately two witnesses got her rego and the police are taking her licence away.
As for me two days in hospital broken leg, bruised back, ripped tendons in my shoulder etc etc lots of pain.
The bike came off better than me i think but crash bars etc are well bent as it an insurance job would you know if its possible for the repairers to buy these parts or will they just right it off because they cant get them easily, I really dont want to right it off as I love the bike so any help you can offer would be appreciated as I am just trying to get some advice before the insurance assessor rings me.
Cheers Jim

Hi from England Jim, is the bike a new model and are the bars OEM? It's quite likely they can be sourced let us know if you have trouble down there locating some ? Meanwhile,I hope you mend quickly:beerjug:

Jim do you "do" facebook

there's a very active facebook page

Failing that I will ask my mate in Melbourne who is very active in the airhead scene in Melbourne If I can give you his number

Do not let them write that off

If they do buy it back and re build it

Values of those are climbing steadily

Get well soon.
It's a shame you aren't in the UK or I could send you a set of crash bars for it.
I'm sure there are many Aussi airhead fans that will have the party's you need to fix what looks to be a fine machine.
Good luck.

Ouch. Is it thru his or her insurance?

She should have at least 3rd party insurance.

If he has it, then he'll have a little leverage as their customer but he'll need to negotiate with his insurance company. Sometimes they allow a buy back.

Ofterwise they'll list it at auction where he could also take his chances against other bidders.

I've managed to convince a company that I could fix my bike for $XXX if they didn't write it off. The fairing bits would've meant a write off if they were replaced at BMW oem prices, but as I had spares they gave me money for those which reduced the costs to less than write off $. As long as it's a repairable write off, and not a statutory write off, then it might be worth persuing.

Statutory write offs are for parts or track, unable to be road registered. Good luck to him.

Jeez Jim, that's a bastard.
The bars are still listed here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=0478-USA-04-1989-47E1-BMW-R_100_GS&diagId=46_0020

I reckon it will come down to the assessor and the company and how bad the damage is, other than the bars. Best to talk to the assessor. A good outcome would be a repairable write off outcome where you get to buy the bike back.
A post here might find parts or advice http://advrider.com/index.php?forums/australia.32/

I could 'sell' you a set of bars then buy them back off you if that gets you over a hurdle.

Send me a pm sometime with a contact number as it would be nice to talk to a fellow gser to get some advice if the insurance company (shannons) start messing me about as I am new to Australian rules and regulations

Hi Bubb,
Thanks for your reply mate, keep hold of those crashbars for a few days just in case PLEASE you never know.

Hi JIm,

So you moved over in the end - its not bad here, eh ?

Good job you're with shannons - they'll sort things out how you want, i should think.
You can choose your own repairer too.

I had a crash on my 1100 and they wrote it off - the only chance you get to buy it back is when it goes to the salvage auctions and you have to bid on it with all the other breakers/trades etc.

Its not the uk where you get the chance to get it - it goes out to highest bidder. It may have change, but i doubt it. Shannons may help you, but they are owned by a bigger insurance group that may force them to auction.

Hope it goes ok - and get better. I moved up to Brisbane - its a lot warmer than down there ? :D

Yes we came over for good December 2013 and live up on the central coast love it, should have done it years ago.
The dear old GSPD has been delivered to wentworths BMW at kariong today for assessment spoke to the guy who will be doing the checks tomorrow he said had a quick look today and doesn't think it's to bad so fingers crossed, he has already had someone trying to buy it (no chance)
Cheers Jim

That sounds promising Jim - fingers crossed. Hope you are coming good too.

If you have no luck with the insurance I have a 93 R100GS we could probably come to some agreement on.
Currently in bits but has all the fruit like an Ohlins, HPN inserts, Hi comp Moteren Israel pistons, six pot , etc.

Hi mate,
Should know the outcome tomorrow of what's going to happen re insurance etc, so if you can hold on for 24hours or so as I would be very interested and would fancy a road trip to come over and do a deal.
If you get time send me a few more details pictures please either pm or email [email protected]
Cheers Jim

Dont worry, I am not in any hurry to do anything, it is just that I have five bikes and the Paralever seems to have slipped to the bottom of the list.
And at 71 I am at the age when I am starting to think about getting everything sorted out and tidied up, and the longer GS sits the more temptation there is to cannibalize bits for my R80 G/S and R75/7.
I dont have a working camera or a phone with one, so it will be the weekend before I can get any pics, but not much to see anyway.
I will email them to you at aol

Any joy with the assessor Jim?
YES mate met him Wednesday nice chap we both looked around the bike and its come out pretty well i think.
New left cylinder head, both rocker covers, left crashbar, right hand guard and mirror, left air intake tube to carbi, front mudguard,re-powder coat topbox lid, gaskets labour etc he will call me back as soon as its priced up
