Advice from VOSA on BMW recall!!!

Suprised at a fault like this when the engine has been around for so long, perhaps down to parts supplier. It would be nice if it had no faults! Why are the japs so reliable :nenau
 
"It is possible for some clutch components to work loose while the motorcycle is being ridden and punch out through the engine block, possibly endangering the health and safety of the rider."


Explains why I got through so many clutches and gearboxes on my 1st 12GS then.

The noise is quite scary.
 
It is old news, and it was a parts supply issue. I saw a R1200ST in SBW Motorrad Hertford a month ago with its rear end off awaiting a new clutch assembly as a result of this problem.

Years ago, I made a living as a mechanic at Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha shops. I was, by the time I left that field, the top mechanic at the last shop. I can tell you without any hesitation that the japanese bikes have plenty of problems too. For example, since the thread is about clutches, when the Hurricanes first came out, all of the clutches on the 600cc version had to be replaced before they left the shop. The owners were never told. My service manager at that shop used to joke that Honda's motto was "We fix it in the field". I'm not trying to be critical of japanese bikes, because they are usually quite good, and I have owned a number of them, but the idea of japanese utter reliability is not entirely gospel. Just my two cents...

Maybe all those who carp on about reliability of Japanese bikes v those nasty german (turkish!) made machines will read this and wind in their collective necks

Err..... I've owned an ST1300 - nuff said. A recurring ECU problem couldn't be repaired during the two years of ownership. And - oh yes - two recalls in that time.

There are current recalls for both Honda moptorcycl;es and Yamaha - I didnt look at Suzuki or Kawa.

Manuyfacturers only make money when they sell bikes, tesdting for all faults is never going to happen. YOU SHOULD JUST THANK GOD MICROSOFT DON'T MAKE ALL OUR BIKES !!!!!! :D :bounce1
 
I know what you mean when I worked in the trade on Kawasaki's there were all sorts of recalls and fixing before it went out, even remember one turned up without any pistons now that was interesting to PDI. Just awaiting my GSA at the moment and cant wait, have fun guys.
