Hi all

i have made the rookie mistake off overfilling r1150gs with engine oil :blast, only noticed when i had went to get fuel and head off for a late evening blast, had difficulty down shifting and at one point had to stop switch off and then rock the bike to get into neutral, after a quick ride home i dropped the oil and replaced with new, only covered about 10 miles, now i have problems downshifting when the engine is up to temp, could oil have got through and contaminated the clutch? gear lever seems to still in position, and if i change up then back down it some times changes.

Gear shifting problem is unlikely to be related to too much engine oil as the gearbox oil is totally separate.

It won't be anything to do with the oil, it'll be the small knuckle joints in the gear linkage full of crap. When removing the small circlips that hold the joints together, remember they're not called pingfuckits for nothing.

cheers for the quick replies, i have only had this problem since i overfilled it, will have a look at the gear selectors and give them a clean, just confusing that it only happens when the engine is up to temp.i had done a google search and on a result from one of the threads on here suggested that oil can blow through the seal and contaminate the clutch plate, trawling through the threads at the moment.

regards

yep done that all looked fine couldn't spot any leaks either, think i may splint the bike and check the plate at the week end.

If (and that's a big if) you'd overfilled it with oil even if it did leak past the rear crank seal it wouldn't in any way effect the gear change - the gearbox is a completely separate unit. I'd say with 95% certainty that your problem is the gear lever,, but not the linkage. It's the bush that's inserted into the gearlever. It's no good just undoing the bolt that hold the gearlever to the footrest hanger, you have to push the bush that's inserted (and now semi seized) into the lever. Clean it with wet and dry or even file it, replace the bush into the lever with plenty of grease then revolt it back in place - do a search and you'll see just how common this problem is - I've had bikes in overfilled with 8 litres of oil in the engine and they've not caused gear change problems or seals to leak, just smokey as hell due to the oil being dumped into the airbox . Sorry for the lack of paragraphs but my phone won't let me do them :D

Did you perhaps remove the level when you were changing Oil and put it back incorrectly?

Thanks for that steptoe,
think i'll look at the bearing,(albertone mentioned similar), would rather not have to split the bike unless i have too. might get away to Ullapool this w/end after all

Andi,
put a little bit less (just at 3/4 on the sight glass) when i refilled it, couldn't make the same mistake twice, (don't think i'll live the first mistake down).

The lever bolt (on mine anyway) is put on with lock tite and will be VERY tight so warm it first.

just a quick update, as suggested i pulled apart the gear lever and cleaned and re greased as suggested and all working as it should,
thanks for the advice guys,

Did you drain the air box when you overfilled with oil?

There is a small plug at the bottom of the left hand side of the air box towards the back of it. If you didn't, have a rag handy when you take it out (it just twists out). Nowt to do with ya gear change but it may stop you from contaminating the air filter (unless it's too late).
