Hi guys - need your help.

Successfully fitted the new Stebel Nautilus horn and all works well - apart from the wiring! After reading several threads I just swapped the old electric connections and connected directly to the Nautilus. However, If I leave my finger on the horn (steady matron!) for more than a quck blip the fuse blows - it's a 7.5v I think. Anyway, the questions is:

a). Should I now rewire using the supplied relay, if so, anybody got some idiot proof noddy guide for fitting?

b). Should I put in a stronger fuse?

c). Any other solution?

Thanks

Bob

Bob,

I take it this is for an 1150 (as per your profile)?

I used the relay when I fitted mine about 18 months ago and never had a problem with it since but some people haven't bothered.

Even with my (very limited auto-electrical) abilities, just following the instructions on the box was easy once I'd realized that the BMW horn is 'hot-wired' in the words of the instructions.

I fitted one on friday night- these are the steps I took- no doubt somebody else will have an opinion but it worked for me.

1. Mount the horn in place of the original using a right-angle bracket

2. Run a cable from the positive terminal of the battery (with an in-line 20 amp fuse) to terminal no 30 on the relay

2. Connected a cable to an earth point on the frame- used the big bolt that goes through the main frame that holds the bracket all the multiplugs under the tank are mounted to terminal 85 on the relay

3. Cut the two wires on the original horn multiplug- connected the green wire to terminal 86 on the relay

4. Connected the brown wire from the original horn cable to the earth point in 2. above

5. Connected a wire from the positive terminal on the horn to terminal 87 on the relay

6. Ran a cable between the negative terminal on the horn to the earth point in 2. above.

Looked at the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual- the brown wire does go back to earth so fingers crossed everything is connected. Not blown any fuses and cannot hold the horn button for that long as I would have no hearing left.

Hope this helps

You MUST use the relay, the oem horn draws 6amps the Nautilus draws 19, use the supplied relay. all tyhe instructions are on the diagram on the box.

Sorry I disagree - I have kept the OEM relay and uprated the fuse and had it fitted for over a year without a problem .

Just fitted a Stebel Nautilus Compact to my 1150 following Haydw',s notes -
after trying to to reconcile the Stebel wiring diagram to the 1150 wiring diagram (negative feed horn button, relays etc) and thinking of messing with the bikes wiring - I followed these notes and it worked a treat !

I mounted the Stebel from its top hole mount, with a heavy duty home made flat right angle bracket, to the original horn mount bolt. This means it hangs down facing forward but is nicely tucked away back behind the turn of the forks but high enough to be clear of road splash and rain.
Accurate position for the bracket holes - forward hole for the original bolt, then 6cm back 5cm to the left for the Stebel mount bolt.

Thanks to those who post such great info to help others !
