hi all,
long story short, my 1100gs 96year has always had a noisey clutch bearing, clutch out in neutral it sounds like a tractor ,cluth in sounds sweet..
last month i chanced it anyway and went to morocco, went off road a fair bit and all was well, fitted TKC's and noticed a wierd vibe at around 70mph which i put down to the tyres.. now i've swapped back to road tyres and the vibes are creeping in more at several speeds but it's hard to pinpoint where they're coming from....this sound a familiar script to anyone? i'm going to open 'er up asap so what should i looking for and checking?

thanks ,jez

Thats not the clutch bearing rattling, it's the gearbox. ;)

Hi Jez,

Your symptoms sound exactly like mine did; does the rattle start as soon as the clutch begins to bite? On a '96 bike you've probably got a '94 box, which, unless it's been modified, will have a tapered roller bearing at each end of the input shaft. The rear one of these was knackered on mine.

I've just replaced both and I'm in the process of re-building the bike. BMW did a 'repair' kit for these boxes, which replaced the tapered rollers with sealed ball bearings, though from what I've read this kit is no longer available. Have a look here

I didn't find it too difficult doing the replacement, with help from a few others, including Steptoe. If you want more details, gimme a PM.

For more information on possible problems with a modified box, have a look here:

On a possible plus side, I first noticed this rattle in December 2001, following an oil change. It did another 40k + miles before developing a different noise last summer, at which point I decided action was needed.

Cheers,

Dave.

cheers guys
i'm going to dig deeper on this one as i'm relativley new to bmw's, on mine it's not so much a rattle as a whirring sound that i know is'nt right, the actual box is fairly slick although becoming a tad notchy now....
there seems to be lots of threads on many sites about gearboxes and model of gear box do you chaps have a basic breakdown of the story and inherant problems behind them and is there a way of identifying gearbox model or is it a case of removing it and seeing whats what?

many thanks chaps, jez
