I have just been offered a 3 month old 1200GS for less than £8000 as new.
No ABS! Said to be 2006 model?
It has heated grips, expanding top box,no other luggage.
I need crash bars,Secdem screen & most of all motorrad type hugger.
Question? Do I buy the GS now or wait for another with all the extras already on it?
What would you do?How much are the parts I need?
Need answers before 9.30 am tomorrow.
Thanks.

Ay up mate.......you could also put this in the 1200 section, may get a response before your deadline. sorry I can`t help more, I have the old monster Adv... :)

Best check Nippy Norman's website for the accurate figures, but as far as I can recall, the engine bars are 96 quid, hugger about 100 and the taller/wider screen about 75.

How many miles, and how much below £8k?

Perhaps have a look on the BMW UK website and see how much equivalent bikes are in the dealers?

Who knows :nenau but that's around £800 cheaper than a dealers gonna charge & you'll get 21 months of warranty instead of 12 :)

If it's yellow forget it :P

What's the mileage and have you seen the condition etc.? Is it a private sale or through a dealer?
It'll handle better. But the ABS decision is really one of 'peace of mind' I suppose.

I'd check that and make it a condition of purchase. So you can get your money back if it is a lie.

Well you can buy the rest. But if it were up to me, I'd get a 50 litre Givi top box and the BWM expanding panniers.

Why do you 'need' them? :nenau

Depends on some of the above. I wouldn't wait for a bike with extras to come on the scene as it is highly unlikely to have all of the aftermarket parts that you want.

Research. Use the interweb. It has lots of good info on it...

Done - just!

Extras

Yes, the previous letter is right - why do you need a hugger etc.? The only ESSENTIAL is the heated grips because you cannot add them afterwards and this is an all year bike. Use the bike for a bit - you may find, as I do, that the screen is perfectly OK and the lack of a hugger makes no difference. I added BMW bars to mine when new 'as I have done on previous occasions. Sooner or later it will topple over and they will pay for themselves. Anyway it is a fantastic bike and mine - after 16 months - has been 100% reliable. I like the ABS and the servo which have given no problem. The ABS has only come on once when I braked quite gently on frozen leaves - very reassuring.

I beg to differ Brian, fitting heated grips is a doddle, I just fitted a set to my 2004 R1200GS for £214 inc vat which took me around an hour, then got the dealer to enable them in software whilst performing the battery drain fix update. All you need is a set of small torx bits, there isn't any glue needed on the grips as they screw onto the bars on the LHS and clamp onto the RHS complete with the entire throttle twist grip assembly.

The parts needed are the RHS switchgear assembly with heated grip switch incorporated, and the grips themselves (the RHS includes the throttle twist grip assembly). The wiring is already there, just plug in, enable the software (dealer only) and use.

Fitting heated grips

Thanks Adam for your advice. I don't think I will have time to fit them myself though. The dealer in Lyon quoted me 'around' 300euros to fit - which is about what it cost you! As an original fitting they are 200 euros here. Yes, I think I will ask him to fit them. They do make a vast difference as I know from a previous R1100R.

Brian, if you are on good terms with your dealer, maybe he would sell you the parts then enable them for you free-of-charge if you are a regular spender at his dealership ? I had hoped my ecu would already be programmed for them but alas, operating the switch after fitting them did nothing until the ecu was 'told' they were fitted.

They really are so simple to fit, all you need is a set of torx screwdriver bits and a small spanner for the throttle twistgrip clamp. Everything is obvious and they take about an hour in total to complete. You would be saving about 90 Euro's if you fit them yourself in labour (assuming a free software 'enable' ).

My bike is so much improved for year-round riding now I have them fitted. They are a £195 factory option, or in my case they were a £214 retrofit. I'm still puzzled as to why they aren't standard equipment as mine is the only one I have seen so far that didn't have them anyway (until now).

Bought it

Spent all day making a Super hugger & making suspension suit me.Spent yesterday fitting Givi top box over pillion seat--fitted it 4 times before it was right. There is a lot of plastic under the seat of the new 1200's-perhaps this is where they lost some weight.Long front mudguard next then the screen willget some attention. Then we will see how it compares to my Vtec!

you done good

Virtually new bike and without that bluddy stupid servo brake system. I reckon these non-abs bikes will be worth more a few years down the line. :thumb
