Got the bike out this morning started ok, ran about 5miles stopped at a mate,s for a couple of hours and when i tried to start it again itwas just clicking everytime i pressed the button. Called bvm rescue, a guy came out (non bvm) and he suspected battery but it tested out ok, he then connected a one of those power pack,s to a point on the left side of the bike and it fired up. We left it running while he checked it was charging ok which it was, then stopped and started it several times without the powerpack connected no problem. the guy reckons it,s a faulty starter motor, and i was just wondering what you guy,s reckoned, any suggestions.

oh, forgot to mention that this has happened once before aprrox 4 week,s ago and i took it to dealers and they checked the battery but said it was fine, and just to stick with it and see if it happened again.

The bikes an o4 adventure.

Just wondered if anyone had had a similar problem.

thanks BOB.

If all the wiring is OK, if it happens again put the bike in gear and rock it back and forward. If it starts after that, it's the starter. If not, you've got an intermittant wiring issue.... and good luck finding it!

When this happened and it did not start i tried rocking it back and forward in gear and it kept resetting the clock and starting the fuel pump priming again ! it sounds like wiring to me.

Classic symptoms of a bad earth. I'd check and clean your battery terminals and where ever it is the earth lead from the battery goes to the frame.

Happened to my mates 03 Adv after he dropped it click, click, click (noise from starter solenoid) as if it had a flat battery, pulled on the battery cables and of it went. When we got home disconnected battery terminals starter terminal and ground connection cleaned them up and reassembled it with vaseline on the contacts. It has been 6 months now and has been good ever since.

Sounds like a problem i had.
Have the 02 Adventure. Similar problem started clicking would not start, fortunately i had no CAT so was able to jump start it. Carried on the journey round Scotland with no probs. On the 02 i have 2 ABS lights that flash together and when it gets started up then they both go out as you drive off. When they flash alternately it signals a fault, namely a flat battery on this instant.
The local BMW garage did the checks for me (connected to the machine) and he could not see a problem with the battery.
I took the batery off and all the levels were very low, so it was the battery even tho the dealer's computer did not spot it.
Harps

know that a mate had similar problems with a 1200GS. Dealer changed all relavant bits but fault remained. BMW eventually replaced bike!
