I am a volunteer at the Beam Engines trust at Crossness do i need commuting added to my car insurance for the purpose of travelling to and from?

Volunteering is not ‘business’, surely?

Similarly, the driving to and from the place you volunteer, is not ‘commuting’ either.

In short, on most measures, social, domestic and pleasure will be adequate.

A very quick call to your insurance provider will confirm.

Change insurer / intermediary.
This

Some insurers are relaxed about volunteering, others want to treat it the same as a job, with a higher premium.

Context is key. Attending one meeting a month is different to travelling at peak hours to work in a charity shop several days a month.

Surely remuneration is the yardstick for determining that a person is actually working/employed
as stated, it is a matter of the wording in the policy as I do not believe there is any regulation or legislation that defines this

Now I have fired up my laptop, I have found this in my car insurance from Saga

VOLUNTARY USE
While your vehicle is being used for voluntary work in connection witha UK-registered voluntary or charitable organisation, the exclusion of hiring on the Certificate of Insurance, in the ‘Limitations to the Use’section, does not apply.

Much the same in my Hastings bike policy
11. Voluntary use
Social, domestic and pleasure use includes use of your motorcycle for voluntary purposes. No payment or income should be received other than reasonable expenses to cover running costs such as fuel.

Surely you are covered under “social, domestic and pleasure” area. You are volunteering so I guess you enjoy it, get pleasure from it?

That's interesting, I'll have to dig out my policy wording. I've always turned down the offer of 'mileage' for journeys I have made for the Parish Council thinking it could then be classed as businesses mileage if I get money to do it.

It's funny as you get older your Cavalier attitude about rules and regulations seems to change to a more paranoid "they're all out to get me attitude".

I suspect it’s more a mature and reasoned fear of the untold hassle and inconvenience if it all goes tits up.

In our blood bike group, we used to use our own bikes. This was covered by social domestic, but I had to always ask if volunteering was covered. It was ok as long as you weren't paid, being paid mileage for your journey to cover expenses was acceptable.
