Advice on 2013 GS TE

Hi this is my first time one here so bear with me, I have had loads of different bikes, my last being Z1000sx and Ducati Scrambler. I am currently bikeless, however on my way to the Ducati dealer to try a monster 1200 I found myself in the BMW showroom. I decided to try a GS and the kind saleman gave me the keys to their demo, after an hours ride I was hooked.In fact I did not bother with the Ducati visit. I cannot afford a new one although the dealer could supply me with a 2013 TE with 10k miles for @10k...tempting. However a friend of a friend has a 2013 TE with 4 k miles for £9400, my question it to people who know these bikes is that a fair price and what should I look out for before parting with cash, thanks in advance.

If the bike fits and you are happy with it then it is the one. All the usual suspects to compare to ie, KTM and Africa Twin. Price sounds about right for a dealer.

My 2013 GS has 60k km on the clock and is brilliant, although I may have a look at the suspension next year. I ride it around the hills of Andalucia, usually 2 up and with a top box full of clutter. It's the easiest bike I have ever had and still loads of fun, even within the speed limit. I'm not a fast rider, especially with my lovely wife on the back but this bike does everything I ask of a bike. A 2 up tour of Morocco is booked for October
Price sounds about right so the real question is, is the dealer back up worth £600. The 6,000 miles extra is just a bit more running in done for you!

I would always consider a bike of this value should really be bought with a BMW warranty which can always be extended later on. You also get the peace of mind the bike has been fully checked over, serviced etc before you collect it.
Get back to the dealer and see if he can sharpen the deal, at the money you are spending Warranty makes a lot of sense.

You won't regret not visiting the Ducati dealer, the gs is awesome, agree with Steve though it's worth the peace of mind buying from a main dealer even though it's a bit more than the other bike. Tell him about your mates bike and get him to throw some luggage in

I'm in the process of looking for a secondhand R1200GS TE and all the bikes I have seen so far are around the 10k miles for £10K, so that would appear to be the going price.

My preference and intention is to go the dealer route, especially if I am spending that amount of money. A dealer is less likely to walk away if you have problems later on. As for the millage, the impression I get is that at 10k miles the engine is just getting warmed-up .........

Sounds a little overpriced? head up Newcastle way - they get cheaper the further north you go. if you can, go 2014 on as issues on early bikes mostly sorted

Folks I have another question, why do some of the water cooled TE models not (GSA) have spiked wheels and is there any benefit . Thanks

The spoked wheels on a GS are a cost option when new are slightly lighter than the alloy wheels, turn slightly better and will take a bit more punishment if used off road.
They are also harder to clean but do IMO look more in keeping of the GS look..
They are currently a Free option on a new GS, ending at the end of March I think.
Just get one bought, summers coming!!!

Last time I looked I thought the R1200GS cast wheels were a pound or two lighter than the "tubeless" spoked ones, and spokes don't turn as quick, i ticked the spoke option on one WC bike i purchased, the additional cost was £175. I removed them and sold because the silver finish was a pain to clean and I found the mags offered better turn in .

I've just removed another set of spokes and fitted BST carbons but this is like night n day comparison and 5 - 10 kilos lighter.

BMW sub-contract the warranty business, you can buy warranty for any used BMW providing it meets the terms.
