Hi,
I am in the process of buying a 2001 1150GS,I need some advice on what i should be looking for on the bike.

I have never owned a GS before so i really dont know what things i should be looking out for,and i really dont want to be buying a dud.

The bike has done 87k and has been regularly serviced. If it makes any difference it has a Remus pipe on it,and it is a non ABS model.
Are there any common faults with the bike that i need to be aware of? and at the risk of asking a stupid question, what kind of sound should the engine make or more importantly, not make.I know this might be very hard to describe.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dave...........

I'd check its history - a good owner should log when things are replaced in the book. Shaft drive might be going at that age and seals all over the place, probably. It's a bit random and I wouldn't hesitate in buying a 1150 at any mileage under 100k if its been well looked after.

Give it a good hard test ride and make sure it stays in all gears under load - and see if anything is leaking at the end of the ride - esp. final drive.

Other than that, it's like any other bike - check the service history well and give it a careful look over.

Jaysus, only out of the Big Brother house and you're spending it like there's no tomorrow

Hello :D

87k?? :D

Don't stress about the mileage......that's high but unlike on other bikes where 87k would mean it's a pile of scrap, the chances are everything that needs replacing has been replaced and as said, as long as the service book is stamped (or there are bills from competant people) it should be fine.

If it's got 87k but still looks good, that's got to be a good sign as well....it could easily have turned into a dog with that on the clock but if it's been well looked after cosmetically, chances are it'll be sound mechanically to.

I hope you're getting it at a bleedin good price with that number of miles on the clock ?? :)

87 K

It will be hard to re sell wey them kinna miles showin.
If its not cheap , walk away .
Give a sub tey the site and watch , the "For sale " section , theres a
bita value tey be had there.
The 1150 Value has dropped heavily this past wee while,

Many thanks for all the replies.
You have given me something to work with.

To be honest the mileage doesnt really bother me too much as i had a boxer i had run up 225k on and all it needed was a clutch and i also had a K series which i had done 170k on which needed nothing that i can remember, both of these bikes were still going strong when i sold them, and i had done all the servicing myself,so to me 87k on a beemer is basically not a lot.
I have heard the GS is capable of 250k,which im sure is pretty true, anyone have any ideas on this?

I really only want the bike as a run around as I have a Harley, and im sick of not being able to use it in the rain,I miss the ruggedness of a beemer.

Pricewise im getting the bike, kitted out with large tank, aeroflow screen and various touring stuff on it for £1400, is that a fair price for it?

Many Thanks once again,
Dave............

,

That all depends on the price. If the price is right it'll be easier to sell than a mint low mileage.

I sold a V reg (2000) bike with 99700 miles for £2750, within 24 hours of offering it for sale a couple months ago. At the price your bike is being offered at, don't think twice. Buy it. If you don't like it, i'll give you a profit on it :thumb

I see how my quote about the Harley didnt come out right in print.

What I meant was that the Harley is now being sold as I am returning to my true love in biking-Beemers!

What I mean about a run around is,a bike that I can use whatever the weather and wherever I want to go.

I like to use a bike and a Harley is not very practical for what I need.I bought it on a whim and now it has to go!

Thanks once again for everyones help,

Dave...........

Setzer,

mines a late '99 on 92k now. mechanically its fine. Corrosion is the biggest problem, on the wheels and spokes (i think they're chrome on the early ones but could be wrong) and the frame, especially the rails at the back under the seat unit. I've hammerited mine. The usual problems with anything painted silver of course. as far as i can tell the suspension is still ok.

I saw a 2000 1150 with 99k on the clock going for £3850 ono recently. It looked mint. I paid £4k for mine with 42k on the clock. Wish i'd have seen this on. Could have had two (one for road and one for off road).
Some guys have all the luck. Bet your missus is fit too!!!! :(
