First post so bear with me,

New to GS ownership and have bought a 2001 1150 in great condition and only 30 k on the clock. So should last a fair few more years yet!

I would like to get rid of the huge cat and heavy looking end can, if an aftermarket exhaust is fitted does the bike require tuning or are they fairly unfussy to these modifications. From sports bike experience they have been very fussy on exhaust changes. Does any particular make suit the 1150 ?

Secondly I would like to get hold of some of the original aluminium GS adventure panniers seen on the 1150's. They are increasingly hard to find. Does anyone know if any of the vario or adventure panniers from the 1200 fit ? I suspect the racks wont allow this, perhaps with the exception of the top box.

Thanks

Hey Joe! Welcome to the site.

Exhaust is a straight swap though if you service yourself adjusting the TPS can either increase/decreasing popping if you get it. The lamba probe should sort out any minor fueling differences anyhow.

If you want the best boxes check out worldbeater panniers. You'll find lots of info on here about them. The guy who makes them is a bit funny but his product is second to none. :D

I know i didn't answer your question exactly but trying to save time and hassle. Sell what you have, use the money to put towards a set of worldbeaters and voila... like gillette razors... the best (panniers) a man can get! THe bmw ones look pretty but if you go down the plastic will break and you will spend countless hours trying to strap the damn things to your bike. Verns panniers, you fall over... pick up and get back on and continue. Heck I've seen examples that have hit trees at 30mph and take a good bash my trucks on a main road... panniers still on bike and useable... dented a bit but the seams were still intact!

Hi Joe. Had an 1150GSA with Remus can + decat pipes. used it for about 20000 miles without problems (or retune) eventually took off the can and refitted the original endcan to remus headers, no cat, as the drone from the exhaust was annoying on longer touring trips.
Had a local company (Zorstex) make an extension to the standard can to clear the factory alloy boxes. Worked a treat and gave it a nice mellow sound.
Never needed a retune for any of the exhaust mods.

Welcome to the site and 1150 ownership Joe.

A lot of folk, including me will recommend keeping the cat (its a legally stamped silencer) and simply fitting a stubby exhaust in place of the can. Save about 6Kgs on the can weight and get a slightly sharper exhaust with better low end response. Cheap to do and no downsides plus you can use a full size box on the left without cut-outs for the can.

Another vote for Verns Worldbeater boxes.

Another inmate likes them as well as it saved his wife's leg in India. The pannier
