Hi folks,

I hope in in the right forum - please direct me if not...

I've got a 2000 R1150GS (ABS) that is not currently running and that I need to move on. It starts, but there are some fairly serious sounds from the gearbox, the final drive bearing needs replacing and the brakes are likely shot - and I suspect that for me (without a garage or the time to work on it myself) it may be into good-money-after-bad territory.

I'd like some advice on either:
- getting it to a good home, someone who has the time and the expertise to make repairing it a viable option; or
- getting as much money out of it as I can by breaking or scrapping it.

I don't have photos right now; it is up at Motorrad Central Scotland. I'm looking for a temporary home for it at the moment. Can anyone help guide me?

If I were you I'd be speaking to Mikey Boy. I'd suggest hiring a van, driving it down to Mikey and asking him to fix and sell it for you. A gearbox isn't going to cost much and the final drive should be walk in the park - £500 all in maybe? Depending on the rest of the condition, mileage, extra's etc you'll probably get somewhere between 1-2K maybe a little more.

If you haven't got a garage to work in, I wouldn't even attempt to break it!!

Good luck:thumby:

Thanks DrAlf. If that's an option, I'd happily hire a van. I assume that's user 'mikeyboy'? If so, I'll drop a PM...

Thanks again - Adam...

If you're simply going to sell it then i doubt spending money overhauling it will leave you any better off after the bills have been paid than selling it as is and letting the "new" owner decide.

If it is reasonable to low mileage and otherwise in good condition then well worth spending the money for gearbox repairs /clutch , final drive and brakes . repaired it will be worth £3500 ish, unrepaired probably £1500 if you are lucky .

If it is high mileage and or tatty then even repaired it is likely that it will not make huge amounts of cash so the choice would be sell as a project , e bay will be your friend as someone will not doubt pay you a grand or so maybe more if you are lucky

Hi all,

Here's some more information - I'm hoping to get a bit more guidance on whether it's worth fixing or selling as is.

A summary of the BMW report - this was just a visual check, although they did fit a new battery and start the bike up.
- RH indicators not working - switch
- Gearbox grinding and whining
- Misfire at idle
- Oils leaks: oil pressure switch; crank pulley behind belt
- RR shock tops out on rebound
- Crown wheel bearing hangning out and pinion oil leak
- Brake fluid discoloured
- Large high spot + binding both front discs
- Rear disc pitted and below 4.5mm
- Pads corroded front and rear
- Rear caliper bleed nipple will snap on undoing
- Front tyre cracked
- Front valve snapped & spokes heavily corroded
- Front brake hoses heavily corroded at calipers
- Frames rusted
- Stands heavily rusted
- Recommend major service

I've not posted photos on here yet, so here's hoping! The flickr album is at https://flic.kr/s/aHskwUtu6s - the full size images should show a lot more of the detail - I've not done any cleaning up, so they show the bike as it is right now.

If you can't do the work yourself or don't have the time or tools and have to pay someone then you be looking at a fairly large labour bill just to sort out the essentials ie final drive strip and rebuild , gearbox strip and rebuild ,shock rebuild, brakes plus parts ie discs ,pads ,tyre , filters and fluids then you would still need to sort out the cosmetics to get good money (still don't know the mileage).

If it was mine and I do have the time , facilities and tools I would sort it out myself BUT only if I was keeping it, as you will never get the money back sorting all the defects and cosmetics out.

I would be totally honest about all of the defects and put it up spares or repairs on E Bay and take what you can get

Thanks for the advice, all. I should have said, although I think the photo of the dash shows it, that the the mileage is 23182.

fd failure at that miles is spot on for what my 1999 1150 managed, as for the gearbox perhaps an early box and a succession of heavy footed riders

There's probably a grand to get that mechanically sound, and that's if you do as much of the donky work yourself....and even then your left with something cosmetically challenged to put it mildly.
Unless someone on here buys it as a cheap winter hack then its a eBay bike. Describe it honestly and I bet it would still fetch silly mone

Sounds a lot worse than your first post! As above, you'd need to be able to fix it yourself to make it worth while. Quick rough guesstimate below - note, includes used replacement wheels and new replacement brake hoses but doesn't include fixing the misfire which could be simple or could be a nightmare. Total price on parts is a combination of new/used prices Timings are my best guess - I'm sure Mikey or Steptoe will correct if I'm a million miles out.

If you're handy with a set of tools, have space to work and have the time, it could be a great project and you'd end up with a lovely low mileage bike......
