Advice on wiring fog lamps

I am going to wire in some of Les's 35W HID fog lamps.

I plan to use them as daylight running lights i.e. on all the time. So I want an automatic system to switch them on. However BM have cut down the size of the battery compared to the old GS and I am concerned that if the lights are on when the starter is used this will be bad news.

So I want the lights to come on whenever the ignition is on, but not while the starter is being used. I understand that the aux socket is cut whenever the starter is used; but can remain on for up to 15mins after the ignition is turned off.

So I have devised the circuit below. Any advice on refining or a simpler circuit / pick up of power would be very helpful.

You have two relays doing the same thing :confused:

I'm also not sure if you can think of the supply and earth associated with the rear/sidelight as a trigger for the first relay......but I don't know enough about canbus systems to say for certain.

I'd take the first relay out altogether and simply use the +ve from the aux socket to terminal 85 (coil trigger) and the switched output from 87 to the fogs.....you could add a manual switch pretty much anywhere but good practice would be after the fuse and before the relay.
 
You're over thinking it fella, just use a single relay switched from aux socket (or other suitable switched live)
You won't suffer any battery deterioration for a couple of seconds of light.

Note - the can bus only stays active if the key is left in direct proximity of the ring antenna. Otherwise the can bus shuts down after about 20-30 seconds :thumb
 
Why not just trigger it from the sidelight or dipped beam circuit? If the LC is the same as the earlier 1200, the aux socket will remain live for a while after switching off the ignition.

Or if you're centralising everything under the seat, use the feed at the rear brake lamp switch.

And as Fanum says - lose the first relay, it's not needed.
 
Relay 1 is only active when the rear lamp is on.
Relay 2 is only active when the AUX socket and the rear lamp is on. So Lamps on.

When you crank the engine, the Aux Socket goes dead, so the lamps are switched off while you are cranking.

If you use just the rear light relay, the lamps will be on while you are cranking the engine.

If you use just the Aux Socket the lamps will stay on for up to 10mins after you switch. (from manual) Also if you use a BM charger, the Aux socket will be live and the lamps will stay.

Relay 1 would be a dil relay, taking only a couple of ma, so would not cause a problem for the canbus system. Also it would have to have diode protect for an induced voltage spike when switched off. (not shown on the diagram.

Anyway that was my thinking. Thanks for your suggestions.

I just wired some of the BikeViz cree's up today - tapped the aux socket for the relay trigger and I can confirm that with the key removed from the ignition the lights go out approx 40s seconds after key out and I walk away.

That is how I did it plus the extra relay so that they go out when the rear light goes out about 4Sec after the ignition is off.

However if you use a BMW charger in the aux socket they will come back on without the extra relay unless you turn them off with a switch

No need for me, I use the bike daily rain, hail or shine - I usually draw the line at snow, but that may change on this bike.
