started my 1200GS today for the first time in 4 weeks although it took some time "coughs and splutters" it started, but it really sounded rough i thought the big ends had gone, "i don't mind telling you a crapped my pants". i let it idol for a little while on the center stand (about 2 min) and then took it for a gentle spin "about 10 miles" and it all settled down and was running sweet.

I phoned SWB mottorrad and they said that the oil had drained from the cam chain and settle on the bottom of the sump and it was not a problem, but i've layed the bike up for longer periods and have never heard that knocking noise before when starting.

my question is has anyone had the same experience and do i have a pending problem??

little man big hammer

the other thing it can be is end float in the cam when its been stood for awhile or its getting near time for tweaking up.when the gap begins to get alittle wide and before the oil has chance to get there it rattles its nuts off then shuts up, mines done it in the past like everyone elses :)

I've experienced the same thing with my bike, I wouldn't worry about it too much.:comfort

I've seen threads about this on other forums and the issue seems to be the right side (I think) cam chain tensioner. There is an updated version that fixes the issue and it's super-easy to change out.

Hope this helps. :)

Had the same thing when my bike was returned from the dealer after a 12k service. They had had the bike for 5 days and my guess is that it had been left on the sidestand which I never do. I thought something terminal had let go in the engine but in my case it appeared to be from the left side. Could be wrong though. Bike's been fine since but would be interested to know what is different with a replacement version and when it was introduced.

Go to the ADVRiders GSpot forum and PM Jim Von Badin. He'll give you the lowdown on why this happens and how the updated cam chain tensioner fixes it and how to install the new tensioner. Not too pricey and super easy to install.

You could also Google "updated cam chain tensioner R1200GS" & get a lot of info.

Good luck,

John

Pardon my ignorance - why not?

I didn't mean that you shouldn't put the bike on the sidestand, just that it's my preference not to. I have this irrational fear that the oil drains from the highest point and takes longer to get there on a start up. Just me being over cautious over engine life.:nenau

Oh God!! My car engine is doomed then, because everything is vertical and above the sump and oil. The previous car's engine only lasted 160,000 miles before I sold it, too. :(

Apologies - wasn't trying to open a can of worms. I leave my bike for extended periods on the sidestand and genuinelly wanted to know if any damage was being done. :beerjug:

And mine lasted 40K more miles than yours. I did say it's an irrational fear of mine and my own personal preference, not gospel in any way, so put the sarcasm where the sun don't shine.:aidan

No cans opened - well not mine anyway. Unless you want the sarcy replies, don't ask about running your engine whilst on the sidestand.:augie
