Advise needed on protecting R1150GS fuel cap filler neck from RUST

I cleaned R1150GS fuel cap filler neck from corrosion and need to protect it.

Any advise will be appreciated.

I replaced mine with a used non rusty one. Some seem some rust and some don't.
2 pak clear coat maybe?

Undo the filler cap bolts and remove the whole assembly from the tank. Sand and remove the rust, treat it with a generic rust treatment, spray with petrol-proof paint and then take greater care not to scratch it when filling up.

Alternatively, tidy it up, rust treat it and just refit it...
