I'm currently looking at replacing my HG kit and am looking into the Aerostitch Darien 2-piece. Has anyone recently bought a suit from Aerostitch as I'd like to know what the service was like, how long the order took to arrive and how much it all cost?

Cheers

Hi - not quite the answer to your question but I bought a Roadcrafter 7 years ago from Aerostich. It is an amazing piece of kit - has covered many many miles in all weathers and has been dropped twice with me inside it.

I wash it in the machine with Storm cleaner and waterproofer and dry it in the dryer to 'set' the waterproofing and it looks like new. Cant fault it.

Service was terrific then and now. This year I needed a new zip in the leg and sent it off to Duluth HQ. They replaced the zip and all the zip pulls and charged me $5!!! TNT took care of shipping.

OK it wont come first in a beauty parade but it's cost me about 1p a mile.

If you get the chance to look at the catalogue on the two-piece, there is a detailed measurement list in the back to take measurements of all areas from neck to ankles. They can be basically made to measure and there are also additional items that can be incorporated in the suit.

Also note the different colours which can be mixed and the materials as well.
Someone has borrowed my book but, there is a ballistic material offered which is more abraisive resistant.

If I can lose 25 kgs, I'll buy one. But not for where I am now. :D

I've had a Darien jacket and pants for a couple of years and about 60K miles. I can't say enough about the quality, versatility, or great customer service. It has help me weather torrential downpours, tornado winds, and although it gets a bit warm here in the desert above 90'F I find it cooler than jeans and a mesh jacket, especially if traffic is moving and there is some airflow through the vents. Some Roadcrafter wearers complain of water leaks in the crotch, but the Darien pants have a different zipper arrangement and I've never had a problem.

On a recent camping trip I forgot my Thermarest pad. The Darien worked so good as a substitute I may leave the pad at home permanently.

If I had it to do again, or when I do, I will 1> get the 'new' grey color as the old (discontinued) grey was in fact more of a muted green; and 2> upgrade to the electric liner. The standard liner is fine and quite serviceable, looks good as a stand alone jacket, etc., but the electric eliminates the need for other electric garment. The electric liner doesn't have a quick hook up for electrc gloves which was a concern to me, but one I would make now and just deal with separate glove wires.

Road Gear (RoadGear.com) make a copy, not made in the USA, that is priced quite a bit under the 'Stitch if you're price sensitive. My wife recently bought a pair of their overpants at a rally, and they look to be a good product, but time will tell about quality and durability.

If the Darien 2 piece is anything as good as the Roadcrafter, it'll be a bloody good set of kit.

The Merkins seem to love the Darien.....have a nip over to Advrider and search there, it's almost as much of a de-riguer uniform as the Toerag is over here ;)

I got the roadcrafter about 3 months back - I had mine custom made and it took 4 weeks to arrive, if you buy an off the shelf suit it's quicker...prices are all on their site but remember to factor in customs duty for when it arrives...excellent kit and worth the cash & wait.

Aerostich

I bought the two piece Roadcrafter 3 years ago. Took a week to arrive. The person I delt with was really helpful and told me they had a sale item for the trousers so saved me money. Look at the sale items on the web. sale items As others have said watch the customs duty as you have to pay it when it arrives. Really pleased with the whole kit and the company's attitude. I wore it every day for a year whilst travelling and not worn a leather jacket since. After a wash still looks like new. If the Darien is anything like you will be very happy. My girlfriend has HG stuff which she is very pleased with, but will buy Aerostich next time. :thumb

Cheers guys. I totted up an order and it works out at roughly £500. I know I need to add shipping and import charges etc... Does anybody know how much that might work out to as I can't seem to find the info myself?

On this thread young nadeem up there is quoting £120. I remebered that because I would quite like some of this kit and I was wondering if I knew anyone in the US to whom I could have it delivered, then posted on to me with a "thanks for the loan of this kit, I've cleaned it and am now returning it to you" message...

Cheers Trotsky, I'd missed that. Looks like this could be on then. Though I'm going to have a look at Rukka kit this weekend.

I have suggested this in other threads on the same subject.

Factor in the international postage costs then the duty and VAT on top of that and you have a hefty premium over the basic $800 cost of the Darien jacket and pants. Some of that money could instead go to a weekend in the USA. Get yourself a cheap flight to Boston or New York. Arrange in advance for the suit to be delivered to your hotel and then rent a bike and get out and see some of the local countryside. Or stay in town and get shitfaced and eat too much. Then just bring back the pants in your suitcase and wear the now "used" jacket.

See, that's where I go wrong, I'm not as devious as Michel de Fromage ;)

Its not true that when Mike arrives in the first class lounges of JFK, LAX & LHR, the hostess have built a special wardrobe for his less than usual attire of Roadcrafter and Darien suits and just turn up the air con in the warmer months for he is a good customer of theirs. :D

Measuring

Hi,

I got a Darien suit about four years ago - bl***y excellent.
I had some customisation done, so did quite a bit of measuring up.
The suit came exactly as I had ordered.
You need to factor in a little extra allowance for the armour which "takes up"a little of your sleeve\leg length. I would say add about an inch to your final measurement.
Take your time and phone them a couple of times - I found the staff very helpful.
