Afghan Heroes Ride, Sunday 14 March

D'ya know, I bet the residents of WB can't wait...six hours of nose to tail bikers all watching the bike in front.

What a waste. Pay ya money & stop in bed. I am

Interesting article in the Swindon Advertiser http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/5052821.15_000_bikers_heading_our_way_this_weekend/?ref=mr
It seems the residents of Wootton have only just been told about this bike ride, and they’re not terribly keen.

One bit of the article says this:
=================================================
“It seems to me that this is going to encourage more people to come and use Wootton Bassett for political reasons – something we have always been against.

“There is a massive difference between a repatriation and a rally.

“Thousands of motorbikes throbbing through the town will be noisy, smelly, thrilling, almost martial – miles away from the quiet, spontaneous and reflective commemorations of young lives lost prematurely.”
===================================================
Rather inflammatory language, but then I guess that’s what being a journalist is all about.

And your point is ?

What about leaving people in peace to enjoy their sunday.

Nothing wrong with the idea of a ride to raise money for the injured & killed soldiers but why inflict it on the people of one small town.

It could have been held anywhere.

I take it you're not going then?

I take it then Snowey that you aren't going on the ride out or that you don't really agree with the whole principal behind it? If you have followed the Afghan Heroes thread from the beginning then you might get a greater idea of what is trying to be achieved. The two press releases in the Guardian and then pretty much the same article cut and pasted in to the Swindon Advertiser both make good reading, especially if you are still so bigoted that you label every biker in the land as "Greasy haired Bikers" As has been said on this site before, if it turns into a free for all where all of us greasy haired bikers go on a rampage and wreck the place, well we will have only fuelled the bigots fires!!
How many big rallies and ride outs have you been on where it all turns to crap? I've been attending rallies since 1979 and not one of them has turned into a bun fight.
I sincerely hope that this one goes off without incident and raises a shed load of cash for a very worth while cause.

No I'm not going.

No I'm not against people raising money for such a worthy cause and have donated to another person who's son is fighting out there, and who's holding a much smaller event.

I'm sure it will go off without incident and be a grand day out.

This run started life though as the 'Show support for Wootten Bassett ride' and I can't remember seeing anyone from Wootton Bassett asking for any support or thanks. What I have seen is a small market town quietly paying their respects turning into what looks like a bit of a circus with I would guess hundreds of people travelling from all over the country to these repatriations.

I personally think that it would have been nicer for the people who live there if this event was held somewhere else and they were left in peace to enjoy their weekend.

am i right in thinking that if you havnt registered on the website, then you cant go for fear of being turned away or the event being closed down?
or im i just being paranoid? and the afghanheros website is being a bit "doomsday"?

Correction: It still is the Show support for Wootten Bassett Ride which is being organized by two people on Facebook. Afgan Heros is one charity benefiting from the money raised.

Yes, if you haven't registered then you won't be allowed to join, otherwise what would be the point of getting 10000 people to register. What the Police decide to do if 15000 turn up is anyones guess. As it is I should imagine that the run will go in groups of 2000 and the finish point is a roundabout on an A road from where people will have to disperce from fairly quickly.

Actually Snowy Afghan Heroes is the only charity benefiting from the ride, WB was chosen as a venue long before the event went ballistic. The feedback so far from the people of Wootton Bassett has been more in favour than against the ride, true there has been some negative comments in the national and local press but that was always going to happen! Being labelled a "greasy haired biker" and being likened to an Islamic fundamentalist group did get up a lot of the riders taking parts noses, they then made it perfectly clear to the editors that this was unfair journalism of the highest order. As todays Swindon Advertiser clearly shows with a far more balanced view of the event. If anyone needs any more information about sundays ride then go along to the Afghan Heroes website (http://afghanheroes.org.uk) and follow the FAQ's link. Personally I am really proud to be part of it. Here's to a great ride to remember the fallen and to say thanks to the people of Wootton Bassett for the respect they show to each soldier when they pass through the town.:thumb2

0900-1000 white 1200 gsa, ducati , and a blackbird

Well then if the Swindon Advertiser clearly shows a positive attitude then it must be ok, dip your bread boys :clap

Well certainly more balanced than the article a couple of days ago that's for sure:thumb

I am all ready to head off in 2 hrs

Stopping over nearby for the night
