Morning

Has anyone successfully downloaded a map of south Africa onto their BMW nav 4 system?

Any help and advice gratefully received

Cheers

Matt

Not quite sure what you mean by successfully? Either the Garmin product or the OpenStreetMap version should work.

The Garmin version on SD card should work straight off and be hassle free in terms of installation. However, it'll be less convenient for doing planning on your PC as you'll need to use Basecamp and load the mapping from the GPS which can be a little slow.

The Garmin download version, installed to PC and your GPS will be a little more tricky to install. Best put onto an SD card if you have City Nav Europe already on the device. You can do this using Mapsource or MapInstall on your PC or just Mapinstall on a Mac. Once installed you'll be able to pre plan your routes on your PC and then transfer to the Garmin.

The OpenStreetMap version can be downloaded as an installer to put the mapping onto your PC along with a GMAPSUPP.IMG file to write to your SD card (in the Garmin folder). You will need to assess if the OpenStreetMap version is suitable for your needs. In Europe it's pretty good, a few minor issues encountered in the limited use I've made of it but nothing that a dose of common sense can't resolve.
