Africa Twin is coming

Engineer is just pipped into second place as Troll of the Week goes to .........

I am sure that it is a very nice bike because it is a Honda - but the design compromise is just shifted too far one way for it to the best overall 'adventure bike'.

Just had an email from Paul at Dobles (sunday eve !!) saying my bike is being delivered to the dealers tomorrow, At Last !! not going to have it till the 1st of March though !!

Bike is being delivered next Thursday they will not register it till the 1st of march, already have the 16 plate reg no so I can fit all the bits to it before its registered

I think he may be driving his plane somewhere and am sure a suitable response will be along soon. ;)

No,he's learning how to drive a new plane so has been a tad busy in the fucking classroom all day !!

Sorry but that's complete nonsense. Its impossible to define exactly what makes a "Motorcycle Adventure" so it's therefore impossible to define what makes the best "adventure bike" . One man's commute is another man's adventure.

Every bike is a compromise of some sorts ........

Indeed every bike is a compromise, this where the GS has been so successful because it has been fine tuned over the years to the point where it satisfies most people most of the time - other bikes, the AT included are shifted in their compromise one way or the other, e.g. The AT's compromise appears to have been shifted more towards off road use, clearly because of the big front wheel, long soft suspension, skinnier tubed tyres, lower power and less pillion orientation - this is great for what it is designed for but restricts the size of its potential market.

I think you are overthinking it . It's just a motorcycle , and it's sounds like a very capable one at that . Perhaps many GS riders have put up with a motorcycle that is a compromise too far the other way and might enjoy the AT more ? Have you actually ridden one then? The reports I have read don't seem to suggest that it is significantly compromised on the road due to its alleged ability off road.

Besides most motorcycles are not logical purchases anyway. We buy them because of the way they look, the way they sound, the way they feel , the way they make us feel and the experiences they allow us to have .

These AT threads are quite confusing. There seem to be a small group of BMW bashers who want to tell us that we should all see the light and buy an AT . Then there's is another small group of die hard BMW fans who insist that the AT is inferior and a poor imitation of the mighty GS. Then there are the trolls.

Somewhere in the middle there are the sane ones who, as I said , realise it's just another motorbike and by the sound of it a very good one at that. I might buy one in a year or so and give it a try , then after a few years I'll have a try of something else.

In recent years I went from an 1150GS which I loved for 6.5yrs, to an X Challenge to a Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport and now I have a 1200 Ctourer to go with the Guzzi. I have also had, through work, a 1200GS for a few yrs which has now covered 56k miles but which has to go back later this month when I change my job. I'll miss it for sure , but it's just a bike. All of those bikes had their compromises but that didn't make any of them massively better than the others.

The Guzzi definitely sounds the best though ;)

Good post.

I don't believe Engineer has yet ridden the AT.Perhaps he should stop telling everybody how the AT is so compromised and overweight and actually ride the thing so he has some basis on which to make such judgements !

It'll never happen!

from the dark side this was sent

It doesn't take much thinking about, let alone overthinking - it is bleeding obvious :) even Honda say they have designed the AT to be more biassed towards off road use.

I do genuinely believe (and this isn't a dig at engineer :D) that you need to ride any bike before you can express any valid or worthwhile opinion about it. (Says he who takes the piss out of the Harley boys but has only ever ridden one in a carpark about 25 years ago ..!)

I know I've said it before, but go and test ride stuff just for the hell of it! When did somebody last ride a new Fireblade?? It's a fucking good bike! but we'll all sit here and bang on about crotch rockets and wannabe racers in their knee sliders!

Riding different bikes is also really good for your understanding of how things feel, how things work, how geometry, suspension, tyre profiles etc etc affect our bikes. It makes you a better motorcyclist, better at diagnosing little mechanical problems in your own bike, makes you appreciate what you've got or maybe what you've not got (the brakes for example - my 1190 has a much better feel in its brakes than the honda).
So go ride stuff, then you'll know what you're talking about .... :D

And how much of that is marketing hype ? How many of these bikes actually get ridden off road. I have seen a GSA look incredibly capable off road...... In the right hands. I have seen that AT being ridden amazingly off road ..... In skilled hands.

Lower power you say?..... Many riders , GS or otherwise, might do well to rediscover the joys of having just 95ish Bhp . I wrote a write up a few yrs back about having the most fun I'd had in a long time when I had a lowly 85bhp 800R for a day. Using all of the power more of the time is great fun.
Skinny tyres you say?.... Many GS riders might find it sharper , quicker steering on narrower rubber and more fun.
Soft suspension? Says who?
Inferior pillion provision? Possibly true that one but I bet more GS owners ride without a pillion than with.....

I genuinely though thought you had ridden one because you speak with such authority. I dont understand why you make such contributions to the thread if you haven't any desire to own one or even ride one...... Have a go then let us know how you get on.

Now you've wandered out of the posh part of the pub, did this mechanical insight help when diagnosing a tank full of diesel :D

Agreed . Having ridden a GS 1200 in Wales it was very good off road , if a little heavy when it landed on me . I would love to do an off road skills course on one then make a decision before I bought one to go round the world (which I am planning to do) (go round the world not buy an AT) I am amazed how many threads are on here about the AT , why not go of to the Honda forum rather than clog up here with stuff telling us on a beemer site how shit the GS is:nenau
